Also Max brings up something important. Your very limited on which encoders to use as well. Just because it says it encodes for Blu Ray doesn’t make it something you would use for a replicated project.

    Thank You Jeff!

You brought up a topic I really wanted to include in that article but just ran out of space. Mandatory AACS is, like you said, a major roadblock for many or most producers such as yourself. Max would be a better person to ask but with fees like that, its almost impossible to secure a profit with less that 5,000-7,000 units once you factor in the licensing and authoring costs – not to mention production.

I wouldn’t say DVDSP is crappy software. You’d be surprised how many titles are authored with it. I would say compatibility issues with Scenarist vs DVDSP would have been an issue 7-8 years ago but players have matured since then.

Here’s a good place to start – it has survival guides and gives you a good run down of the spec.

    Scenarist runs 5K these days.

Good work John! This is why I love DVD…to see what’s possible!

Programming that many buttons can make you crazy. I’m in the middle of a project with 6,192 different buttons across 795 PGCs (menus). If I do 2 menus a night I calculate I’ll be done by the March or April 🙂 I’m using Scenarist so it will take me a bit longer than I’d like.

This is 4×3 Letterboxed. Just create a 720×480 Sequence and size your 16×9 clip there. Encode 4×3 for DVD.

You would use DVDSPs Stories function which are like playlists in iTunes. It allows you to use the same video over and over without adding more size to your title. Lots of tutorials on the net as well as in the manual.

23.98 is just that in NTSC or PAL. Make an NTSC disc. Almost all PAL players manufactured theses days will playback NTSC titles. The problems might show up when the player is connected to a PAL monitor which does not handle NTSC….so your hopes of it playing on EVERY player/monitor set would be impossible.

Here’s a good thread to read:

Once you tell compressor you want to make a 5.1 a box will appear where you drag and drop each audio file onto L/R/C/LS/RS/SUB.
