There are only 3 tools that would give you an image used in replication: Scenarist, Blu Print and Do Studio. The cost and functions are explained in the article in this month’s edition of CC Magazine. One thing that was omitted, because it was so recent, is that Do Studio’s monthly license has gone up around $400/month.

Each has it pros and cons. Blu Print is much more intuitive making authoring faster buts its $60K. Scenarist can be a bear to use but once you start to understand the UI, its no slower than BP – its 30K. Do Studio is very affordable but you also limited on the kind of functionality your disc can have.

To put it bluntly, your probably going to have to invest more than 10K if you want to offer professional authoring services for replication. Like Max said, not many encoders are good or deliver a complaint stream. If this is simply a one time thing then your better off paying a vendor.

Duh! Of course you don’t have the original project or you wouldn’t be asking the question 🙂

The easiest way is to extract ALL assets from the disc you have and re-author from scratch in whatever authoring tool you have. Other than that you’ll be facing a steep learning curve.

Sorry…You already listed all the steps so I didn’t add anymore info. Rip the audio to aif with a tool like MPEG Stream Clip, bring it into your NLE and raise the audio levels. You’ll need to re-author the disc from scratch with the new audio. Do you have the original authoring project?

There are other tools which will replace the audio at the VOB and IFO levels but you really need a good grasp of the DVD spec to do something like this. Here’s one particular guide:

iDVD is a very simple authoring tool. If you need this kind of functionality, you’ll have to move to DVDSP.

Hi Jeff

I believe your thinking of BD-J development. BD-J titles are coded in developer’s tools like Eclipse or abstraction tools like On-Q Create. Those JAR files are then brought into an authoring application like Scenarist or Blu Print and Muxed. All authoring application have built in muxing engines.

HDMV is a different story where all the interactivity is authored withing the authoring package then also muxed. Less capabilities but still powerful.

Yes…I would use DVDSP. Its the best “all around” authoring package in my opinion. Yes…You would design your menus in Photoshop or After Effects

One thing to remember is that authoring, compression and menu design are three distinct processes. You won’t find any tool which does all three well. If you like squeeze’s quality then do your compression there and bring it into another tool which has nice menus. Do you have DVDSP? Better yet design your own menus.
