Steve (above) is right; as per user reports, USB is available as import direct from the cam.
However, as per The HFX Book, by Barry Green, “While it may or may not function to use the HVX in USB Device mode with a Macintosh computer, it is not recommended or guaranteed; when connecting to a Mac, please use the 1394 terminal instead” (Green, 253).

As reported in other posts in this forum, and on the FCP forum; USB import is painfully slow (never tried personally).

When the new “anti-FW” Macs came out (WTF!?!), I invested in an AJ-PCS060 This ia a discontinued item, but is widely available on eBay. Besides being a field depository for up to 60GB of P2 media, it is a great USB capture device. My inport/capture times (straight into an FCP timeline) are very fast.

For studio work this is ideal, and for field work, it means that my 4x8gb P2 capacity is tripled. Also, ingest to the onboard HD is faster than capture to FCP (or so it seems).
    Hope this helps,
    Eric

Wow, This is a great tip. How did I not know about this feature! Just saved me a ton of time on a commercial!

  • I hate to ask the obvious, but have you opened a new sequence, placed the material into it, rendered and then tried to export that sequence (to QT)?
If that works, start from there and rebuild the project.

Post a screen-shot and maybe it will be more clear.
    Good luck!

If you export that section, does the jump happen in your quicktime?”

This is my 1st question as well. Also, did you try supering the text as a .PNG/.PSD file?

There may be lead-in, or tail-out in the original sequence. Also it is possible to cut sections out of a nested sequence in it’s parent sequence, and not have that reflected in the original sequence (from which the nested sequence was taken).
Are you the original editor of the project?

It could be that speed modifications were made, or trimming/blade cuts were done to the nested sequence that are not present in the parent.

Not sure if this is helpful, but may help de-mystify the process.

    Good luck.

  • Yeah, I wasn’t going to say anything for fear I wasn’t completely understanding your process, but it sounded similar to what I was doing and results were no good. The nesting trick works great, and I figure the other suggestion about exporting as QTfiles and dropping back into the TL would also work.
Thanks to everyone in this community who is always ready to help another editor keep his hair in place one more day! 🙂

  • This sounds like it would work. I will have to give it a try. Thanks for the input. I never thought of it that way, but now that you mention it, this would address LOTS of my work-flow issues with green screen image! Am I right in thinking that if I were to take my raw GS footage from both cameras, key out the green, render the entire raw clips, then drop both into a separate timeline (as nested sequences), I could also do motion pans, zooms, etc. and the background would stay “locked” with the foreground (keyed layer)?

If so, I am will commence kicking myself…

  • After looking into this it is not really possible from within PP. I suggested that he capture his screen using “ScreenFlow” and we can go from there…

November 19, 2011 at 10:07 pm in reply to: Anybody using USB 3.0 drives with Final Cut Pro?

    Hi Shane,
Thanks for the answer, but LaCie is making both cards, and a driver that work on Macs using OS 10.5 or better, and that have a PCI-Express card slot.

Research online shows that some users of G5s with a PCI-X card slots are looking for similar solutions. I was just wondering if anyone had found one…

  • Thanks Jerry. Yes, on subsequent episodes, when the sequence setting are set properly (and pixels are set to square) I am able to import the 960×540 directly into the TL without having to render. I would love to know how I can save my previous episodes work (including assorted L3s, Titles, Tails, etc.) without having to re-render and re-size the entire TL. I know this is a completely amateur mistake, but I was kinda thrown off by the whole “importing 960×540” thing. I had never had to work with clips from iMovie before… Again, thank you for your quick response.
Any idea what the frame rate for this iMovie imported QT video will be? Or is there a way to get detailed information about the QT file other than the “Get Info” command in the Apple Finder?
