Vincent Rosati Re: Down FPS from 30fps to 24fps GRRRRR!
by Vincent Rosati on Aug 5, 2010 at 7:41:29 pm

Generally, using default methods to reduce framerate from 30 to 24fps will introduce an awkward cadence to your motion.
I haven’t had to do this for some time, but I don’t recall there being a ‘correct’ way to do it in Premiere without a plugin.
I always did this in AE with Twixtor. Instead of simply dropping frames it would redraw frames. I believe that AE now has this function in the default installation.
I’d look through the After Effects archives. I think Andrew Kramer has an AE tutorial for changing framerates in AE, it might be searched by ‘frame rate’, of ‘ time remapping’ or something.

I have used a Panasonic AJ-PCS060 for years and been very happy with it. Officially called a “60 GB Portable Hard Drive Storage Device (P2 Store) for P2 Card Contents”, it is one of the best accessories I bought for my HVX. The P2 Store can be powered in the field by the same batteries that your camera uses, or by an AC adapter in studio. It allows for a quick “dump” and storage of P2 footage, and freeing up your cards to be recorded to again. It also acts as a card reader, and allows for P2 ingest straight to FCP. Using the P2 store as a card reader is much faster than loading clips direct from the camera itself. In general, you will see that almost anything is faster than loading from the camera.

I have four x 8GB P2 cards, and in the field I can rotate these to always have at least two in the camera. This effectively triples my storage capacity, and allows for over 90 minutes of field shooting at DVC HDPro 1080i60 or AVC-100. Since I am usually shooing in DVC HDPro 720pn24, I have about four hours of capacity.

The best part? Recently these things have been going cheap on Ebay. Since they are really little more than an SD card reader and a hard drive, there is litte that can go wrong with them. I bought one as a backup, with AC adapter, two batteries, and a Porta-Brace case, for less than $250 a few months back. Keep your eyes open, and you will find a deal! Another feature of going this route is that if/when you are ready to sell your camera, this makes it a better package for the prospective buyer.

Let us know what you decide on!

  • Yes (to Joe), and yes (to Noah). After a little digging, todays plan is to run through the material three times, feeding the PPT through the prompter so talent can trigger slides and still be DTC. PPT will be captured once each using Camtasia for Mac (2.2), Screenflow (3), and Snapz Pro (I read a good review on another forum). The video (green screen wide) will be captured via HVX200. I will be exporting the various screen capture versions to best available format for FCP ingest (probably a .mov), then laying the PPT footage to the DTC “real time” video which will be 720p30.

The original idea was brought to me by the client, who thought that he could capture both at the same time, on his own time, all to the Screenflow interface, and then have me edit the existing files within Screenflow to save time. SF didn’t like being overloaded, and performed poorly on the video capture.

Honestly, I am not so much worried about the capture of the rather basic PPT slides we are currently running, but we are discussing changing to Prezi, and that program can produce very dynamic presentations, so the screen capture will have to be good; no dropped frames, speedy FPS, etc.

I appreciate ALL the input, and will let you know how the results turn out. Also, (@ Roderick) I am going to look into a CS6 option over the weekend. Ultimately this is my preferred method, but it would have to be something that the client could perform the initial capture on, so their is resistance to any steep learning curve.

Agree, this is an excellent ingestion method IMHO.

  • Thank you for the suggestion. We started with Screenflow… very disappointed with the results. Low frame rate, image is poor on output. Limited supported camera / mic options.
Looking for something with high frame rate / HD output, then exporting to NLE.
    Thanks though,
    Eric

  • Thanks Roderick,

I am proficient in AE, and Premiere Pro in CS5, so I would assume that I could assimilate to the Captivate interface. I haven’t checked that out yet. I was kind of looking at Snapz Pro to capture the PPT (in native .mov at 29.97 fps), feeding that through a teleprompter with an HVX200 behind it. This way, he is speaking DTC while triggering the PPT slides (actually looking at Prezi to replace PPT). In post, I will edit in FCP or similar, but we want to get the “real-time” DTC footage on the screen with the presentation. Edits won’t be in the screen capture software, but I want SCS that will capture at a high resolution.
Thanks for the advice, I will look into Captivate right now!

    @ Bill Davis
Wow! Thanks for the tip! I am currently using Prompt Dog to feed a “real” teleprompter via VGA out from a MacBook Pro, but would love to have something that could mount directly to the pedestal tripod we use (it is pretty heavy duty). While I couldn’t find a suitable bracket for the MBP, I know of one that will mount an iPad to the tripod perfectly!
I am going to try this app, and will report back soon!
    Thanks,
    Eric

You are not an idiot. I honestly appreciate that you were trying to help. As you can see, no one else has posted to this thread, and I still don’t have an answer to my question. Thanks again for trying, if I do find a solution I will be sure to share it here.
It is kind of a bummer, since I currently have this AWESOME tripod, and no way to mount a camera on it (without spending $4K on a Sachtler head).

    Hi Mike,

I really appreciate the input, especially since I have had very little response to this posting. Unfortunately, you will see that this has actually only THREE bolt holes… I looked up Vinten 4-Bolt Flat Base Adapters on B&H and Adorama, and this IS the industry standard name. Just the wrong one for my needs.
    🙁

    Thanks anyway!

  • LOL! David is right, this is not really what FCP is built to do, but I think I might know a slightly faster method.
Build a 10 frame slug in the viewer. Insert it (F9) into the timeline where you want the first one. Down arrow key to advance to the next edit. F9. Continue till done, or fingers cramp. 😉
As David said, this is a pretty fast process. Should take less time than it took to reply to this post.
