    Ted,

Great run down on the process. I think between the two of you, hopefully I can get something together. I appreciate you taking the time to provide the detailed walk thru.

    Hi Steve,

Funny enough, I was playing with a miniature last night and a year or so ago, had a similar idea with the green object sliding through the sand/dirt. I had not however, considered the still before and after. Good idea.

If you do work something up in your trials and discover anything, appreciate any updates.

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Hi Ted,

We talk a couple weeks back about Free form pro when I was talking about draining my lake. Hopefully that will fit in to your tutorial soon.

I bought FF Pro as a result. So, back to my dirt issue. I’ve watched Andrew’s tutorial and it will certainly fit in (great tutorial too). My problem right now is just not exactly sure how to approach this with FF pro. I don’t have a real good grip on how to use displacement maps to drive the dirt movement.

I was actually messing around with my desert image last night with FF but wasn’t making any progress.

Appreciate any pointers on where to start.

    Hi Steve,

I am just looking for a way so I would be happy to attempt it without CGI. Now, my ship IS CGI of course.

The way you describe sounds like it would work. Any pointers on how to do that? The part that is fuzzy to me is what to use to actually dig up the ground. I assume you would ensure the camera is at your preferred angle and then push the dirt with something in the general shape of the ship and in a manner that “that” something occupies the same area of the ship and then roto it out and replace with ship?

Could use some advice on this.

    Thanks,
    Eric

    Hey Ted,

Well based on your recommedation and discussions with Chris from Mettle, I purchase FF Pro. It is actually on sale right now for $209 in case anyone cares to know (usually $299).

I left an earlier post as well but talk about a huge improvement in render times, try 86 seconds for a 300 frame clip versus over an hour for the previous version.

Now, I’m dying to learn it and very excited about this product.

He also mentioned the terrific package you are developing with Aqua and I’m looking forward to seeing that and perhaps a tutorial. 🙂

    Chris,

The Freeform Pro demo is incredible and I intend to buy it real quick. Seeing the special of 30% off that shows right now is a great way of enticing me. 🙂 Shows at $209 from $299 right now!

Also, the render engine advertised is incredible. I tried the benchmark test and it came in a 1min 26 seconds for 300 frames where the comparable project with the previous free form was well over an hour! In fact after an estimate of an hour and half and only 1 % afer a few minutes, I had to stop just to get back to some fun stuff.

    Excellent!

Appreciate all of your help as well. Now, THAT’s customer service.

    Ted,

It would be nice if it fits in to something you are already doing. What is this Aqua pack anyway?

By the way, I’m just toying with the regular freeform. I was trying to apply it to my “lake” and turn the view sideways to sort of pull the mesh backward in to z space. It seems hard to grab the point you want to pull back.

    Thanks Ted,

One additional comment, question and I will be out of your hair. 🙂

Visualize, if you will looking out over a lake from the bank. I am thinking of trying to create a draining effect (I guess like a toilet), where out in the middle of the lake, as if the plug is pulled beneath and the water begins to flow down through a hole. I envision it more localized like the water is going down a drain, not so much that the whole water level is lowering. So, if I froze the frame part way through, the water would appear to be bent downward.

Like the parting of the red sea but circular looking. If that makes sense.
