The only cards offering hardware acceleration for Premiere are the Matrox Axio and RTX2. They will only work with PCs at this time.

There are many suppliers of I/O capture cards for both platforms, including Aja, BMD, and Bluefish, but these cards don’t accelerate anything. Some models do support hardware up/down conversion in real time.

I believe there are issues with drivers for these cards being available for Premiere on the Mac, especially if you intend to run FCP on the same box. But I’m sure they are working on it.

I’m hearing “under $8,000. list” in the US. Pretty much the same price as the HVX200 (at least before they started discounting it heavily).

For a description of the camera in operation, go to:

The backup workflow for the PMW-EX1 is one of it’s nicest features. First of all, it uses ExpressCard memory, which is twice as fast as P2 for downloads, is less than half the cost, and plugs into current laptop card slots.

Second, you can copy the files directly to an XDCAM HD disk in the field (They use the same file format) with the PDW-U1 portable drive unit, and these disks will play in XDCAM HD decks. Sony has announced that they will soon be coming out with a newer version of the drive unit with integrated ExpressCard slots for one button field transfer to $30./disk media with an estimated 100 year lifespan. No laptop needed!

Should work great on my Axio. With 1000 lines resolution, it’s literally twice the rez of the HVX200.

Wish I had that kind of money. For the P2 cards, I mean.

The 24P setting still records to tape with a 30i signal (pulldown added). You should capture and edit with a standard (29.97 1080i) project setting. Think of this camera setting as an in-camera “film look” effect.

    Edit in a 24P project.

Do you have XP SP2 installed? I think that’s necessary for HDV camera driver support.
