    Should work great on my Axio. With 1000 lines resolution, it’s literally twice the rez of the HVX200.

    Twice the res with half the information. XDCAM is just HDV repackaged. I’ll take the rez hit for the ability to edit with ease and produce great looking images with my HVX.

    We’ll see when this camera actually comes out what it can really do.

    OK, I have question – after I took a little time to learn about ‘Express Cards’:

    Why is Panasonic using an old technology card that requires a Raid chip on board each P2 card to handle the bit-rate?

    Am I missing something?

    Sony only needs 35Mb/s while Panasonic needs 100Mb/s. HDV is a highly compressed codec.

    Another huge difference is the color space, 4:2:0 vs. 4:2:2.

    Don’t think this is a clear winner by any means. This is another good option but I would stay with the HVX myself. It does have seem real cool features, I like the idea behind the zoom ring for AF/MF

    I thought I read that Express Cards can read 800 mb/s in and 2.5 gb/s out

    Well I think that would still fall short of Panasonic’s needs. Also remember that P2 came in before Express32 cards. So there is always choice to be made.

    Not saying I have research the Sony card, just offering a thought.

    The amount of data that we need to record is up to 100mbs, unlike the Sony at 35mbs. The DVCPRO HD codec is an I frame or Intraframe codec, thus each frame can stand alone. XDCAM HD is an Interframe codec, which means that the frames are interdependent on each other. ultimately this means that there is more compression in the XDCAM HD footage. The RAID allows Panasonic to have the higher bit rate and customer to have the benefit of less compression on the images.

    When we first introduced P2, Express card was just coming on the scene and the PCMCIA slot had been tried and true. Still is; it has a very substantial reliability track record on insertions. We feel that the track record and the robustness of the card is a critical component for the production arena.

    According to Mikko who’s out on the show floor at IBC, Sony says that:

    a) the EX1 will only record to SxS media, not to generic ExpressCards

    b) the SxS looks like it’s actually more expensive than P2 (700 Euros for 16GB = $950 US)

    c) the EX1 uses rolling-shutter CMOS technology and exhibits some “wobble”.
