with the storage, are you running the 8 drive arrays as RAID50 or something similar? how much bandwidth did you have or need for Quad HD DPX? I’ve seen other posts from Juan saying he uses a 16 bay FC chassis. i’m hoping he’ll chime in here.

that’s what i want to do. but both this system, and my home system, have the CalDigit USB3/eSATA card, which doesn’t support port multiplication. otherwise that setup would be perfect.

i have been thinking about ditching the GT120 as well. i hate that it’s taking up a 16x slot.

on my system, i’ve decided to run 4 internal drives in a software RAID-0. i get 500MB/s with that, and i don’t need to use an HBA card. but since it’s RAID-0, i do have to back it up religiously.

I’m using Shotput for card offloads to the RAID. I know you can select multiple offload destinations (RAID and USB3 drive at the same time for instance).

but i’m looking for something that might work after the fact. we didn’t buy the USB3 drives until a few days after we started ingesting. I’m also looking for a cheap way to backup an entire $9k RAID that doesn’t require another $9k RAID.

on my 3,1 and 4,1:

slot 1: 16x (double width)
slot 2: 16x (single width)
slot 3: 4x
slot 4: 4x

pretty sure the 5,1 is the same.

yes, the 570 needs a double wide slot, as does the 5770. i had a similar issue, so i replaced the 5770 with a GT120, which is a single slot. it’s a step down for sure, and i’ve been thinking about getting a Quadro 4000 (single slot) with a second power supply to replace it.

also, most RAID cards need an 8x slot. slots 3 and 4 on the Mac Pro are 4x, so your RAID card won’t run at full speed.

from what Juan has told me, when running them as GPU cards and not GUI cards, there is no difference between the PC cards and the flashed cards from Macvidcards.

Juan might know better than me, but I’ve seen references to an Open CL “fix” for the nVidia cards. AE seems to run fine with my 570 on my 4,1 Mac Pro, so i never looked into this fix

ironically, i think i’m gonna bring FCP7 back into the mix. it can create native AVC-Intra quicktimes from the P2 cards incredibly fast. and it deals with spanned clips correctly and lets me rename the files. so that might be my first step before importing in Premiere.
