    Hey All

This isn’t really a SAN question. But I know this is the right group.

I’m currently working at a live-to-tape event for Red Bull. We’re running a 4 edit suite system in a hotel room: Mac Pro with 8 drive SAS RAID6 with 18TB of storage, 6 port Small Tree ethernet card to 2 laptops and another Mac Pro.

Right now I’m copying the contents of the 18TB RAID to cheap 3TB USB3 drives, so we have a second copy for when we travel back home. i’m wondering if there’s cloning software, such as Carbon Copy Cloner, that can support a multi-volume target, such as 4 external USB3 drives.

    thanks

    Eric,

You should check out ShotPut Pro .. we use it on our DIT carts for something very similar to what you’re doing.

It’s very simple to set up, fast and effecient and does a MD5 checksum as well if you need it.

Let us know what you end up with.

I’m using Shotput for card offloads to the RAID. I know you can select multiple offload destinations (RAID and USB3 drive at the same time for instance).

but i’m looking for something that might work after the fact. we didn’t buy the USB3 drives until a few days after we started ingesting. I’m also looking for a cheap way to backup an entire $9k RAID that doesn’t require another $9k RAID.

    thanks

    Eric,

I think (note the word think) that you can use SP Pro to copy a file or folder from a RAID to 3 DAS drives … you don’t need to be just ingesting from a camera card … our workflow guy is out today, otherwise I’d check with him.

Try it …. you just have to set up the source as your RAID drive.

Re, making a clone of your $9k SAS RAID …. if you don’t need SAS speeds for the clone you could always buy an 8bay eSATA JBOD and stick some 2TB Seagates in there … pretty cost-effective.

that’s what i want to do. but both this system, and my home system, have the CalDigit USB3/eSATA card, which doesn’t support port multiplication. otherwise that setup would be perfect.
