Rap – here’s a good HDV primer, it goes into data rates etc for DV and HDV Apple intermediate so that you can compare…

Wow.
I’ve used probably three different devices with my PB with no dramas, and I’ve not tweaked anything RAM/app-wise from how it came outta the box. Running very low RAM at the moment – 512MB – but it runs just fine. I use for offline work off my FW800 drive.
The only other possible issue I can think of from what I have heard and read is that this may be an OS or Quicktime issue – it has sometimes been repaired by a re-installation of Quicktime… you can’t easily do this because it’s part of every Final Cut Studio App – you need to delete the receipts. Here’s an Apple article on how:

Also, what OS / software versions are you using? Downloading the latest “dot” upgrade might also help…

[rap] “o.k i guess the HDV 1080i50 is for PAL .
Yep.
but what about the 720p30 ?
This depends on the format your material has been shot on. You’ll need to know that before you online. Ask your camera operator.
and whats the difference between HDV1080i60 and HDV1080i60 Apple intermediate codec?”
Intermediate codec is another way of dealing with the HDV/CPU issue – it works in the opposite direction, by bumping the data rate up to a constant I-frame format. You need faster drives for that. Your best bet is straight up HDV1080i60 – this is native HDV.

[rap] “1- why DV anamorphic and not offlineRT NTSC ?
Offline RT NTSC will save you a lot of space on the hard disk, and is the right choice for a low res cut if you are working with NTSC material.
2- why anamorphic? i didn’t say anything about 16:9 ?
I believe Tom suggested DV NTSC Anamorphic as an alternative to Offline RT NTSC. Both are good alternatives to editing in Native HDV, which is very taxing on the CPU, and might make your cut hell with so many tapes. You won’t save any space editing in DV, but your pictures will be easier to look at. At this point it really comes down to a space consideration. If you have enough space to do it all in DV, that’s the way I’d probably do it. Anamorphic will be necessary in either format, as HDV is a widescreen format.
3- when online comes, and we want to get the best out of our tapes (HDV), what format do we choose to online?”
Use the easy setups for HDV.
Hope this helps.

Obviously something in the way the deck is communicating with it all – I use the same setup (diff source and drive) all the time oon my 17″ G4 PB with no probs.
Check all the external device settings in FCP and make sure they are OK before you try and open FCP with deck attached. Obviously make sure that the deck’s on when you boot FCP (I know that’s a no-brainer, but it can get overlooked).
You could always try deleting preferences – that often cures weird and wonderful behaviour.
Also check your deck settings – there may be something in there causing the fuss. Have you used the DSR20 with your PB before?

Rap,
I’m no longer sure what you are asking here, especially seeing as Tom has already answered your questions, and now you seem to be answering your own.
Your persistence is to be admired, but you either need to explain yourself far more clearly, or do some more reading so that you know exactly what your questions mean.
Don’t forget the FCP manual.

Thanks, guys. I figured that was the case – it sounded like an outlandish claim. If true, might have made for a good “B” suite :o)
