Hi there. I’m trying to run FCP5 on my G4 Powerbook (1.67Ghz) with 1.5GB RAM. I’m only handling small simple jobs on this (using Guad for big jobs). So I’ve got it hooked up to a Licie via FW800.

However I’m having a couple of issues from the outset. 1) when I boot FCP it tells me it can’t see the device (Sony DSR20) I capturing from (via FW500). So I ignore that and try to crash it in, I go to ‘log & capture’ and the thing just crashes before it even opens the capture window. It’s seeing the external storage device ok but not the capture device.

Has anyone had this problem before? Or know what could be the problem. Oh, also it doesn’t crash if I open the ‘capture’ window with the deck unplugged.

Cheers in advance for any hints.

Obviously something in the way the deck is communicating with it all – I use the same setup (diff source and drive) all the time oon my 17″ G4 PB with no probs.

Check all the external device settings in FCP and make sure they are OK before you try and open FCP with deck attached. Obviously make sure that the deck’s on when you boot FCP (I know that’s a no-brainer, but it can get overlooked).

You could always try deleting preferences – that often cures weird and wonderful behaviour.

Also check your deck settings – there may be something in there causing the fuss. Have you used the DSR20 with your PB before?

thanks for your reply Enzo. It’s great to hear you’re using this set up. no I haven’t used the deck b4. in fact this is the first time I’ve used the PB with FCP. So this is pretty new ground for me. I’ve been into the menu on the deck and set it up appropriately.

I know the PB (using the apple menu) can see the deck but it does say ‘unidentified device’ should it know what device it is? Also I notice in FCP A/V settings>capture presets…in the summary it says video device DV video is missing. That doesn’t seem right. But what’s really annoying me is I can’t trash any prefferences because there’s no prefferences folder for FCP in the usual place. Although this is litereally the first time I’;ve tried this set up so maybe none have been registered yet…

Hmm…does that make sense? I’m probably doing something obviously dumb here. Because all this was a no-brainer on my G5 it just all plugged in and worked. Anyway I’ve gona plug in a PD150 and see if that makes a difference. Also how much ram do you usually allocate to the FCP application?

    Cheers

oh…here’s another couple of things. The PB can see and name the PD150 (although it thinks it’s a VX2000) and but it still crashes. But I could initially capture into imovie ok – although now that seems to have shat itself as well …aaargh!!!

    Wow.

I’ve used probably three different devices with my PB with no dramas, and I’ve not tweaked anything RAM/app-wise from how it came outta the box. Running very low RAM at the moment – 512MB – but it runs just fine. I use for offline work off my FW800 drive.

The only other possible issue I can think of from what I have heard and read is that this may be an OS or Quicktime issue – it has sometimes been repaired by a re-installation of Quicktime… you can’t easily do this because it’s part of every Final Cut Studio App – you need to delete the receipts. Here’s an Apple article on how:

Also, what OS / software versions are you using? Downloading the latest “dot” upgrade might also help…
