starting a project
Posted by Rap on September 20, 2006 at 8:33 amhello guys
we are starting to edit a project that was shot n HDV on final cut pro, and it is NTSC
this is my first time with NTSC and first time with HDV so i have some question… And i’m not so confident with FCP
i guess the best way is to us the easy setup to get the right setting for my project , right? so since we have lost of tapes we start offline. so do i use the OfflineRT NTSC? and how so i know which one to use for the online? there are different HDV!!how much is it different to edit and NTSC for someone who been always editing PAL?
we have tapes that are DV format? can i mix formats? do i capture them as OfflineRT NTSc as well?
please excuse my silly question but i want to make sure that i start the right way
is there anything i should know
thanks youEnzo Tedeschi replied 19 years, 8 months ago 3 Members · 15 Replies -

You may want to consider off-lining with DV anamorphic. It is a much more edit friendly format and taxes the CPU much less than HDV. This won’t save you space, but will neither format requires very much. Without system details and the number of hours of footage, it is difficult to make recommendations beyond that.
I spend most of my time in NTSC, and the biggest thing I’ve had to get used to when editing PAL is thinking of 1/3 of a second as about eight frames instead of 10. Video is video

September 22, 2006 at 4:21 pmDear Tom
thank you so much for your reply, it is very encoureging.
excuse me for asking more silly questions but i wanna make sure i am on the right track coz i need to take decisions a.s.a.p. and wanna make sure that i start the right way and not having to go back in the future to redo everything all over again.so basically if i set the easy set up to offlineRT NTSC is that o.k? why DV anamorphic and not offlineRT NTSC?
the HDV tapes are more than 100 tapes and there are few DV tapes. what do i do? we are hoping to get the final work to festivals and screenings on TV and wherever possible , we are working on that too.
so what do you think the best thing is?when you suggest : “You may want to consider off-lining with DV anamorphic”
why anamorphic?many thanks

Your questions imply a lack of experience that may be crippling for this project. If you are serious about moving forward with your project in a professional manner, my suggestion would be to hire a consultant or an editor.
Please don’t take offense to the above

September 23, 2006 at 7:57 amo.k sorry for bothering you but one last question
offline NTSC is for a pgoto right?
what if i wan to capture 100 of houres and i dont need the media to be in full quality (like n avid you choose 15:1 ) how do i do that in FCP?
i thought offlineRT would take less room on the hard diski would really appreciate it if you could answer my qustions after all if i dont ask ill never know
many thanks

September 23, 2006 at 8:10 amo.k its me again, not giving up easily.
according to the book writen by Diana Weyanand i was right by choosing the offline RT option since :
“its a high compression offline codec. it’s a good option to use for capturing a long project off line because you canstore approximaely two hours of vider per GB of hard drivee space compared to the only five minutes of full quality DV AND you can play more real time effects with offlineRT than you can in DV…..” -

I’m no longer sure what you are asking here, especially seeing as Tom has already answered your questions, and now you seem to be answering your own.
Your persistence is to be admired, but you either need to explain yourself far more clearly, or do some more reading so that you know exactly what your questions mean.
Don’t forget the FCP manual.

September 23, 2006 at 10:05 amo.k I’m really sorry i’ll try to make this as clear as possible
Tom suggest “You may want to consider off-lining with DV anamorphic”
and i was wondering
1- why DV anamorphic and not offlineRT NTSC ?
2- why anamorphic? i didn’t say anything about 16:9 ?
3- when online comes, and we want to get the best out of our tapes (HDV), what format do we choose to online?thank you

September 23, 2006 at 10:22 am[rap] “1- why DV anamorphic and not offlineRT NTSC ?
Offline RT NTSC will save you a lot of space on the hard disk, and is the right choice for a low res cut if you are working with NTSC material.
2- why anamorphic? i didn’t say anything about 16:9 ?
I believe Tom suggested DV NTSC Anamorphic as an alternative to Offline RT NTSC. Both are good alternatives to editing in Native HDV, which is very taxing on the CPU, and might make your cut hell with so many tapes. You won’t save any space editing in DV, but your pictures will be easier to look at. At this point it really comes down to a space consideration. If you have enough space to do it all in DV, that’s the way I’d probably do it. Anamorphic will be necessary in either format, as HDV is a widescreen format.
3- when online comes, and we want to get the best out of our tapes (HDV), what format do we choose to online?”
Use the easy setups for HDV.
Hope this helps.

September 23, 2006 at 10:38 amthank you Enzo and once again sorry for the silly questions. now one more question and i’ll be gone (promise)
talking about the online – you suggest that i use the easy set up, but since its my first time with both NTSC and HDV, there are different kinds of HDV in the easy set up how would i know which one to choose ? o.k i guess the HDV 1080i50 is for PAL . but what about the 720p30 ? and whats the difference between HDV1080i60 and HDV1080i60 Apple intermediate codec?thank you
