Using Compressor, and frame controls, what are the best settings for a 29.97 to 23.98 conversion test?

Thanks Shane! I’m looking forward to trying it out.

Sorry, I could have stated my question clearer. What I meant to ask was for example, even if I shoot an entire project at 29.97 fps, (which will naturally give it a video look), if I decide afterwards that it should have a film look (ie. 24P or 23.98 fps),can that be changed in post in subtle degrees, or is something like the Nattress Film Effects more of a general type effect?

Thanks for your feedback David and Shane. Your explanations are very helpful!

I’m coming in from an SD background, new still to HD. Planning a whole new project in the future, is there a preferred frame rate for a project going to Blue Ray that will be screened on a digital projector to a large screen?

Yes, you guessed it. It’s to get “that film look.” The predominant footage is 29.97. But if I’m hearing you guys correctly, perhaps I should continue shooting in 29.97 (not 23.98), edit the project in Apple ProRes at that frame rate and change it over to 23.98 after the edit is over with Nattress Film Effects. That will in the end give the very same 23.98 effect?

So, it really ultimately doesn’t make a difference what frame rate the footage is shot in because that can be fixed later?

I have a Decklink HD Extreme set up with my Mac Pro, so I’m looking at an HDMI (TV connection) or HDMI to DVI cable (if I was looking at something like the Dell Ultrasharp monitor). A 1080p HD TV then is still the best option?

So since I’m looking at a compromised scenario, not being able to yet afford a pro HD monitor, is a 1080p HD TV a better choice than getting any computer monitor for editing?

I appreciate the difference of what you are saying.I will have to check and colour correct separately on a pro monitor in post.

For budgetary reasons, I have to purchase one or the other soon. For flow monitoring in 1080p, is there any qualitative difference between considering a computer monitor like the Ultrasharp or a tv?

Thanks Ernie. I am just using it to monitor 1080p smoothly that has a good look.

Is there a difference between using a computer monitor like the Ultrasharp or going with an HD TV like the 1080p Sony Bravia?

Thank you Todd for your feedback. What is strange is it happens very rarely, but as you can see, it’s very obvious, even on the small Canon monitor screen.

I will take it in for repair. Ya, I have no idea what it is. I hope it’s not serious, or will take a long time in the shop. Any further suggestions, experience are always very welcome.
