Thanks David. Yes. I shot it in 60 fps because most of the footage will be slow motion in the edit. I set up fcpx project in 23.98 fps and the little footage that should be normal speed was slowed down to 23.98 fps in Cinema Tools then sped up 2x in the fcpx timeline. The rest of the clips were just dropped into the 23.98 timeline and of course will automatically be reinterpreted to half speed for final export.

Is it better to work through compressor?

The camera timebase is 24 fps but I assume that the final export should be 23.98? So I’m not sure what the editing frame rate should be. I’m new working with the GoPro especially trying out the other frame rates that it has. Trying to create a short nature video with a play on lighting reflection on water and the world that inhabits coral reefs.

The footage is mainly underwater shot of fish and reefs on a GoPro Hero 3 Black. A lot of it will be half speed with some normal speed. Not sure what a Solomon effect is.

Thanks for your replies. I guess Red Giant is thinking maybe it’s time to step up to the Looks Suite,
    or Colorista?

Thank you for all of your clear responses. It makes my decision as clear. In the meantime, I should probably change from Snow Leopard to Maverick also. I have some projects on the go still in fcp 7. Will I be able to use it, perhaps move some things to fcp X?

    I appreciate your info guys.

I’m running on a MacPro, around 5 years with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core, 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 memory and still on Snow Leopard (Version 10.6.8). How is that? Too old? Is it worth also updating it to Maverick?

Does it edit slower in H264 than in ProRes? When fcpx first came out people seemed to be complaining about how well it handled raw H264 files, suggesting Premiere instead for that reason.

I appreciate your feedback. So far, I’ve generally had to stay away from including sections of footage where it occurs. Haven’t used Motion enough yet to utilize it as a goto app, but would love to see a step by step tutorial on using it to help with issues such as this and for smoothcam.

Monitoring from my 7D screen, sometimes, it seems to occur when I don’t expect it at all outside of those clear stripes, like certain rocks, buildings, vegetation…

I brought the lens in the other day and compared it to another one and funny, the other one was actually softer. I guess my reaction was the shock that cheaper non L lenses could be sharper in any way. And perhaps, just as important, I had never used an f/4 lens before.

I took my lens out to shoot some video afterwards. It was a bright, sunny day by the port… tried the polarizer also. The look of the shots was like a motion painting, beautiful colours that I couldn’t stop appreciating. It’s a language I’m learning in light, and I appreciate the feedback and education.

Should the 7D work differently with the 17-40mm than the 50 and 100mm prime lenses which are not L-series lenses?
