Dell monitor feedback
Posted by Enrico Lappano on May 29, 2011 at 11:08 pmWhat do you think of the Dell Ultrasharp U2311H as a monitor for fcp 1080p video editing? I’m using a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core and Decklink HD Extreme.
I’d really appreciate any feedback on this because cost is an issue.

May 30, 2011 at 3:41 amIf you are just using it for mac monitors, Dells are great. I have two. But, not for color grading, you need a high-end professional grade monitor and output card for that.

May 30, 2011 at 2:41 pmThanks Ernie. I am just using it to monitor 1080p smoothly that has a good look.
Is there a difference between using a computer monitor like the Ultrasharp or going with an HD TV like the 1080p Sony Bravia?

May 30, 2011 at 3:08 pmMost other Pros on the forum would agree that to accurately color correct and monitor video you need an output card such as an AJA Kona or Blackmagic etc and feed your signal to a true, broadcast monitor like a TV Logic, Flanders, Sony broadcast etc. Sure, not everyone does that, but that’s the only way to trust what you are adjusting. To just view your timeline on a TV set could lead to not seeing what you are actually adjusting. There are issues like interlacing, color balance, alising etc, that don’t show accurately on computer monitors or TV sets. Just saying.

May 30, 2011 at 3:53 pmI appreciate the difference of what you are saying.I will have to check and colour correct separately on a pro monitor in post.
For budgetary reasons, I have to purchase one or the other soon. For flow monitoring in 1080p, is there any qualitative difference between considering a computer monitor like the Ultrasharp or a tv?

Yes, there is. TVs and Computer Displays are designed with different purposes in mind. The aren’t designed the same. A computer display will NOT give you a good VIDEO image. You need an HDTV at least. And there are many that are in the same price range as that Dell Display.

What Shane says. We run Dells in all 5 of our edit suites for computer display only. We run 5 Flanders Scientific Grade 1 Reference monitors for our HD outputs

May 31, 2011 at 3:15 pmSo since I’m looking at a compromised scenario, not being able to yet afford a pro HD monitor, is a 1080p HD TV a better choice than getting any computer monitor for editing?

“Only if you can afford an I/O device (AJA. Matrox, BlackMagic) to feed it a proper video signal. Although TVs often have VGA or DVI inputs, they display no better or more accurately than computer monitors when fed a computer signal from a computer display card.

May 31, 2011 at 4:18 pmI have a Decklink HD Extreme set up with my Mac Pro, so I’m looking at an HDMI (TV connection) or HDMI to DVI cable (if I was looking at something like the Dell Ultrasharp monitor). A 1080p HD TV then is still the best option?
