I used the Canon HDEC 2/3″ prime lenses and was pleased with it overall. I chose these lenses because we were shooting with a steadicam and the fact that all focal lengths are all identical in shape and weight made it very fast to change, without rebalancing or calibration of accessories. The performance of the lenses was uniform throughout the (lens)set.

Chromatic aberration was minimal and I didn’t notice any ghosting. I think I had a set of 5mm,9mm,14mm,24mm,35mm,55mm. I dont remember the conversions from 2/3″ to 35mm…maybe somebody can post a link.

They are very fast lenses BUT you will not get a 35mm DOF from them.

I had rented the BTLH900A and was blown away by the quality but the price led me to BT-LH80W. I used the change to get a 17″ Panasonic and now use the 8″ as a on board monitor, the 17″ as a Client monitor.

They may not be cheap but definitely worth consideration.

We use Panasonic BT-LH80W 8″ monitor for field review. It is probably one of the most accurate monitors out there. Special functions with built in waveform, pixel for pixel and red focus function is very useful. It has a direct AB mount as well.

Ikan’s are great for lower budget monitors but should only be used for framing, nothing else IMHO.

I dont know about a Multiplier but you can zoom into a letus without much loss. On occasion I have used the zoom function to turn a 50mm lens into a 65mm.

Just check to make sure they have an compatible mount for the lens you wish to use.

PS: Before you spend your money on a letus check out your local rental shop as most of them carry letus, PS technic and similar brands. You can test your theory before investing.

Hi Erich,

I know I am digging a thread thats been ended but I wanted to add a different perspective.

-In the DC market (and I am sure you get a lot of out of state customers) I have found people are very out of touch with the technology aspect of video production and post. They just really dont understand the impacts or advantages of most systems. But again you deal with these people a lot more so I’ll trust your judgement on that.

-The other market that does not affect you is the government sales of P2 material. I know a lot of my colleagues who have furnished their entire facilities with P2. They have studios built around this, with 2700’s, 3000’s and more. For us (federal+DoD) it is a very smart investment because we will use these systems for 10+ years.

We are insulated from the up and downs of the commercial market and our clients are unaffected by what formats we choose to deliver on. For us all that matters is highest quality and durability for the best investment possible.

That probably might have a small impact in the decision making process of Panasonic and Sony.Who knows?

If you are trying to achieve POV as seeing through the eyes of a person you need a steadicam. That’s the more realistic way of doing it as our brain compensates for motion and shakiness in our eyes.

If you are looking for POV of a person like a reality show (try to see from their perspective as they climb a wall) lipstick cam is the best way to go.

Thank you everybody for your input. It’s great to hear from such a wide spectrum of production houses. I think the business models people have suggested are very valid in today’s economy.

I am trying to structure my company (as the federal side is unaffected) to be modular enough to adapt to any changes we might have to face. We are also investing in a lot of upgrades and adding edit suites.

I guess I just don’t want to be caught in a unrealistic expectation of the market. Especially with our planned re-location back to Los Angeles next year. I will be relocating my federal position as well, so there is no risk of loss of income but if my shop is not making money; I still have to pay for the equipment I own personally.
