We hire people for long term and invest time in training them.
I want my editors to understand what they are working with and get under the hood if there is a problem. I dont like people that throw their hand in the air as soon as there is a problem.
Our DoP people are very creative cinematographers and DIT’s.
Our AD’s are people who have worked their way up the ranks, they understand what every department does and know how to do it themselves…….and so on
This is the way I was trained when I started the business and it has worked for me so far. I have very talented, creative people that solve any problem they face.

My hiring practice is a little simpler. When they come in to interview I talk to them for about 5 minutes off topic to see if they are pleasant and smart.
Then I lead them to one of my edit bay where I have completely disassembled one of my AVID machines. I ask them to put it back together and call me when they are done.
If they can make it work, we look at reel and talk more.

Just to add to Tadd’s comments there is also the factor of MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) of the 35mm adapter. Even with the top end system like PS+Technic you will suffer sharpness of the image.

Aside from the Genesis and Viper (as mentioned before) you can also use the new Panasonic 3700 with a dual link HD-SDI our to a SWR-1 Deck for a 4:4:4 capture.
The Genesis requires a large crew and demands a much higher rental fee (only available from panavision). Aside from your DoP an experienced AC and DIT is a must.
Viper shoots in a filmstream mode which requires DIT support on location.
The 3700 only has a 2/3 imager as opposed to the Genesis 35mm size but is easier to use as it is designed around an ENG type body (available at most rental houses).
There are new companies (including panavision) that are offering flash memeory based recording systems for 444 capture but they are still very expensive.
There are many reasons why a cheap 444 output capable camera is not on the market for 25K but I think with newer codecs like the AVC-U and similar advances the softwares we use, we will be able to handle motion and keying much easier in the future.

The Elite allows for back focus on your prime lenses but you can buy the Extreme and later upgrade to an elite by purchasing the back focus. The upgrade can be done in 5 minutes.
I would reccomend to purchase the extreme and test it. If you think you need it you can always upgrade. I dont think there is a much price advantage to buy the unit complete.

$750 is a good rate for DIT and is comparable to the Local 600 rates. But what do you need a DIT for the HVX200? DIT’s (Video Engineers) are usually required for higher end cameras like Genesis, F950, Viper…etc.
There are not enough control in the HVX200 that would justify a DIT.
