June 20, 2005 at 6:15 am in reply to: PI 3.0.1a demo crashing when trying to curve movementIf you’re tracking motion in AE, be sure to apply it to a target object, and then copy the position data from that object for import. If you just try to copy the info straight from the Tracker, it won’t import into pI.

After you hit the render button, make sure to select a format that supports an alpha channel (PNG, TIF, TGA, and a few others). AVIs out of pI don’t export with alpha channels at this time.
Once you’ve picked a format that alphas will work with, the Save Alpha box should be checkable on the Render Settings page.

Hopefully Alan will pop by and have some ideas, or you can try writing in to support@wondertouch.com

This can be done in pI. Make an emitter where the particles have no Velocity and a very long Life.
You should change Size Over Life so that the particles grow over time, and if you want it to drip and smear, give the particles a bit of Weight (you may want to use Weight Over Life so that they don’t start dripping right away and Weight Variation so they don’t all drip as much)
If you really want it to seem that the ink is soaking into the paper and blurring things, you can turn on Don’t Erase in the Project Settings.

What settings did you have checked on the Render Settings page?
One thing to remember, and perhaps this is what’s causing your problem, is that while pI outputs the alpha from the particles, it doesn’t export the alpha channel of a background image.

June 19, 2005 at 6:34 pm in reply to: PI 3.0.1a demo crashing when trying to curve movementAre they the latest drivers, or the latest certified drivers? The difference is that the latest certified ones are tested with more programs (I think).
Is there any difference if you alt-click on the keyframes rather than right-click and select Curved?

The demo version only allows you to load the demo library, but you can check out the snow emitters by downloading ShowIEL, the free library viewing program
https://www.wondertouch.com/showiel.aspThe blizzard emitters are in the November 2003 library

Any Nvidia or ATI video card made in the last few years works with OpenGL and should be fine to run particleIllusion. The more video memory it has, the better off you’ll be.
If you have a fairly new video card and pI is still slow, then you may need to download the latest certified drivers for your card from the manufacturer’s website.

This is how it should work in Photoshop. Create a mask around whatever you want to keep solid. In the Channels palette, select Save Mask as Channel, and then save the image as a TIF file.
I use Corel Photo-paint on a daily basis, and the only format that it seems to export alpha channels with is TIF. Even though other formats do support alpha channels, your photo program may not be writing out the alpha with certain image formats.
