What version are you using? The feature that allows you to end footage is only in version 3.01, an update to 3 that you can download from the website.

If you export a sequence of PNG files, you can import that into Flash as a clip. That’s probably your best bet for getting clips in.

Yeah, that’s the only difference between the emitters in the two versions. An animated particle shape can make all the difference, and bringing Forces into a scene add a lot of randomness and realism that you just don’t get from an emitter all by its lonesome.

You’ll need to use the Offset function when trying to match a moving background. The basics of how to do this are explained in Tutorial 5 of the help manual. There are a couple of ways to deal with it:

1-If your animation program has a script/plug-in that exports position data of an object that particleIllusion reads, you can just bring that data straight into your emitter. Doesn’t look like anyone has written one for Vue yet (does Vue have a scripting language?)

2-Use a motion tracker that’s compatible with pI, whether it be one like Syntheyes or Smooth-running Gun that’s stand alone, or one in a compositor like After Effects.

3-Do it by hand. Alan gave a nice example of this in an old thread that can be found here.

What do you mean that it becomes too large? What is your monitor’s resolution set to?

Instead of hitting Alt+3, you can always just grab the borders of the Stage window and drag them out to make them larger. Just so long as the stage area is bigger than 720×480 when you hit the render button, you should be fine.

TGA will give you the best quality output with SE, the next best being an uncompressed AVI. Even a highest quality sequences of JPGs can look really good if you need to save the disk space and don’t need an alpha channel.

DIVX and the similar codecs are good for delivering video, but they aren’t very good for editing/compositing with. I don’t know if its still the case, but there used to be an issue when loading a DIVX video into an editing program that scrubbing forward would play at normal rates, but going backwards would slow things down tremendously.

Cinepak should never be used, unless you’re delivering video to someone with a 10 year old computer. It’s an old, slow codec.

There isn’t a way to fade a background in/out to black, at least not in the Background Image controls.

What you could do is use a the Fade Black emitter from the May 2001 library, which is just a black square that has its Visibility graph animated over the course of a few frames. It won’t help if you want to fade from one background image to another, but if you just want a simple fade in and out, it should do the trick.

What you are calling a directory, we call a library file (with the .il3 extension), and I guess that’s where the confusion lies. There are a few ways to save that file.

Since you already have that emitter saved into one library, you can copy it to the JackMcGuinness library through the Library Manager. Hit Ctrl+M to open it up. On the top left of the interface, check the name of the library that is loaded into the left hand panel. Hit the Load button and find your JackMcGuiness.il3, which will then be loaded up into the left-hand panel. In the lower center panel, you should have a window that lists all your libraries. Scroll through that list until you see the logo_01.il3, and select it. The list of its emitters will appear in the right-hand panel. Now you can select the “JMG Growing 2” emitter and hit the Add button, which will drop it over into the JackMcGuinness library.

Perhaps by directories he means libraries. If so, you can right-click on the emitter in the stage and choose Add to Library, or hit the Add to Library button in the emitters Properties.
