Is your stage larger than 720×480, and is it set to 100% zoom? That’s the main reason people have renders that don’t match their project size. If not, drag the sides of the window to make it larger, or hit Alt+3 to maximize it before you render.

Your problem is that particleIllusion doesn’t include the alpha of any background images, just the alpha channel of the particles. There’s no setting that will fix it.
The solution is to hide the background image, render just the particles, and put the two images together inside Photoshop/After Effects. It’s an annoying extra step, but there’s not getting around it if you need an alpha channel for your final image.

If you’ve set keyframes manually and have some space between each one, you can right-click in the Graph window, choose Scale, and scale the frames (x) by 50% to make your emitter twice as fast.
With Record Position, you can’t really get the same scaling effect, because there is a keyframe on every frame, so no space to scale down to. You’d have to manually delete half the keyframes and then do it.

Nope, you’re pretty much stuck with a super once you’ve converted it. You’ll have to go back to a previous versions, or remake the settings of the particle type.

smokey sparkler 01 in the January 2004 library might be a good starting point, as well as Bullet Holes 03 in the March 2002 library. Just turn their Number down after a few frames so they only send out a burst of sparks.

Did you change the frame rate to 23.98 in pI before importing the clip? I don’t know for sure if that would have an effect on your output, but it might. Did you change the field settings in the Project Settings? What codec did you export the clip to from pI?
Rendering a still image sequence is usually the best way to go, simply because then you don’t have to deal with whatever problems a codec may bring.

Nice stuff for only a week! Something you might want to try is adding lighting effects to give the impression that the particles are in the physical space with you. By that I mean adding another emitter that has the Intense option checked, giving it a similar colour to the orb, and letting it brighten up the background video, especially on areas closer to the orb. So the side of your face, your arm, the wall, etc. There are some emitters in the May 2001 library that can be used for this.

No, there’s no search by name option at this time. The next best thing is to grab Kim Cuttle’s Excel spreadsheets that list all the emitters by name and in what library they reside.

What program are you exporting the AVI from? There are some specific settings I’d have to select in Vegas before exporting to pI, otherwise I’d get the same thing.
This is what you need to do specifically for Vegas, but maybe these settings will give you some clues.
In the Video tab, make sure the Video Format is set to Uncompressed. At the bottom, there should be two checkboxes, Render Alpha Channel, and Create an OpenDML (AVI version 2.0) compatible file. Make sure both of these are checked. If you render with them unchecked, the AVI loads up as a blank in pI.—
