Any idea why this is happening in the first place?

    Thx

yes. this is my next step, but I’m still concerned about having trashed the KGCore files. Does anyone know if this is integral to the OS, or will they get back into the Framework Folder when I reinstall?

    Thanks.

I had the same crash report and really made a mess of things. Seeing that KGCore was called a “plug-in”, I found 3 files with the name in them and trashed them AND emptied the trash. My thinking was that these were typical plug-ins. But I had found them in a Framework folder so I think they were fundamental. Trying to be clever, I thought perhaps installing the latest update would take care of the problem. But the update for FCP 6.06 will only install on top of 6.05. I have 6.03, not having kept up. So I downloaded Pro Applications update 2008-05 which is supposed to have 6.05 included (as listed on apple’s web site) but doesn’t. I can’t open FCP at all. Can’t even use it to open a quicktime file that has nothing to do with the project that crashed. Trashed preferences.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Eric-

I export all the time for my own work and test and test ad nauseum ala Ken Stone articles and everything else I can find. This is exactly why I wanted to pick your brains–because it’s an art, dependent on so many objective and subjective parameters. No worries-not giving myself a huge learning assignment before tomorrow–just trying to cheat and skip to a workable answer.

Thanks to everyone! I’ve been trying them all. Re: size–going with “current settings” because it’s probably true that youtube shrinks it.

    Have fun tomorrow,
    Ellen

No, I wasn’t planning to get into this nitty gritty with others–I’ll just give them screen shots.

I’m trying to educate myself–I use all of these terms but I realize that I don’t REALLY know what they all mean. (Not on the critical path)

    This is so helpful.

Audio questions; I don’t know meaning of Kbps as opposed to kHz and don’t see a setting. How are these units related to 16 bits? Little Endian Linear PCM? Multipass vs. 2 pass VBR I’ve learned recently that audio settings have a significant effect on file size but not sure which are more important than others.

I’m probably supposed to use “defaults” on some of these but, since not sure if I modified them, need comprehensive settings.

    Lost in audio lingo land,

    Ellen

Yes, yes! Please advise. I’m with Election Protection working with 100s of shooters. Youtube was just shorthand for the technical assumptions. We dispatchers are sort of field producers on a National level and will be the ones deciding whether to upload to Youtube or anywhere else public.

Thus, we’re not strictly limiting the length or file size. But want the smallest size at the best reasonable quality. Fairly quick and hopefully not too dirty

So, I’m making a bunch of assumptions in asking the question. Feel free to assume 10 min. Note: I also have to assume that people won’t have Compressor. Need to get QT export settings. Specifically:

    Ref movie or self contained?
    frame rate and size
audio settings are really important to file size so please include
    anything else they need

Feel free to send screenshots if easier but it’d be great if you’al would answer this publicly.

An aside: if professional filmmakers reading this are from Virginia, Missouri or Nevada please think about acting as a non-partisan volunteer on call. Sign up at http://www.videothevote.org

    Thanks so much,

I know–and I diligently test different settings. But here the situation is: quick and dirty export, around 20 min SD DV 4×3 48 hkhz direct from FCP (not through Compressor) I’ll be instructing 100’s of shooters (non-partisan) how we want them to upload and tapping the FCP community for best guesses. Won’t hold anybody to anything!

    Very Grateful,
    Ellen

The HV-30 really rocks–best prosumer out there hands down. Just transfer your footage by Firewire to computer–the same with all of these types of cameras.

  • First, Thanks so much for the description.

Can this be done in iDVD? In general, I’m wondering if I need to learn DVSP for what I do generally: I edit in FCP and make very simple menus for a single film (.mov) , or make a DVD of several films. Also, I tend to deal with SD, SD anamorphic and HDV and need to down convert from HDV to SD, and to make HDV DVDs (haven’t tried this yet…) I’ve already decided to learn Motion and Sound Track and would love to delay learning DVD SP.

    Thanks,
    Ellen
