I realize this is an old thread but for anyone that has trouble stabilizing a long panning shot, I worked out a methode just using the AE built in tracker. It’s really easy. Here’s a link to my tutorial blog which explains it all:

I see this was posted in 2006 but I’m having the same problems with AE CS5
I recently made a map animation a la Indiana Jones and when I rendered it out in best quality AVI possible, there were two frames that were partially black.
I’ve had this happen before actually, usually it’s not black but like TV snow. Just a few frames in an otherwise perfect render.
If anyone knows how to solve this, I’d very much appreciate it.

I actually just found the solution 10 minutes ago.
It’s not the ‘strength’ parameter that I must keyframe but the ‘radius’. See, I was right in thinking I made some fundamental error. I was concentrating on the wrong thing because when you manipulate the strength you see the explosion happen, so I naturally thought that that was the parameter to keyframe. But it’s the radius i must use.
