The type of lighting is the key. Hot lights (incandescents) won’t cause strobing, but flourescents will. Without a clear-scan
setting, it would normally be difficult, but with a 1/100 shutter, it should work OK.
I work in the Netherlands occasionally, and like all 50hz countries, I have to use ClearScan indoors at big events. On my Sony
Beta camera, it’s always been 99. something that looked best (not quite 100, but close), so 1/100 should be OK.

I just saw the specs for the DFX-12 online. They’re a little different than the 1202VFX:
Maximum levels for Mic input (XLRs) is -22dBu, all other inputs are +20dBu, main
outputs are +20dBu, all others are +4dBu. Notice the Mic in level of your DFX is very different
than the 1202 I have (+14dBu). I never asked, why do you have an XLR cable running from
your guitar amp anyway instead of a 1/4″ TRS cable? Are you running it through a direct box or something? I don’t know of any guitar amps with XLR out (but admittedly, I don’t know a lot about guitar amps!)

Hmmm, not sure (I’m not a super audio expert). The Mackie has gain on the 4 Mic inputs, could you possibly have the gain
knobs turned up on the Mackie mic inputs from the guitar, but not on the mic inputs from the IOLA (coming from FCP)? The levels
should match pretty closely.
Your guitar into the Mackie XLRs is+14dBu, the output from the Mackie to the IOLA (to the computer) using the Main Outs is +28dBu,
the IOLA I/O is +24dBu, and the Mic inputs of the IOLA signal (from the computer) is a +24dBu signal going into a +14dBu connection.
I use both XLR-XLR and XLR-TRS cables to connect decks through a Mackie and both work fine. I don’t know much about guitar amps,
but can you send a signal from the preamp to the Mackie, before the amp, to keep the level reasonable?

The Mackie 1202 (I think it’s their only 12 channel mixer) has line level *and* mic level inputs. So a guitar,
for example should go into a line level (1/4″ TRS plug). Line level means a signal between -10dBu and +30dBu
(mic level is below -30dBu). The input on an AJA IOLA is +24dBu, so you should be OK.

We use an AJA IO LA for our Beta SP input and output. Deck into IOLA, IOLA plugs right in to the computer
by Firewire. XLR I/O of the deck through a Mackie 1402. The IOLA has Component, S-Video, and composite I/O.
What I like about the IO is that I can take it with me on the road, it plugs in just as easily to my PowerBook,
so I can edit while on the road. Twice I’ve been able to do all the cuts-only edits on projects while having fun in
Europe (usually we bring back the tapes and work in the studio). Once we rented an NTSC Beta deck in Paris, once in London.
We load everything onto a Firewire 2 drive RAID and edited away.

Yes, sort of. I don’t think the built-in Disk Utility will allow you to do a RAID1, and performance
on the important Write part of throughput is less than a single drive, so you’ll take a performance hit.

RAID Level 1 provides redundancy by writing all data to two or more drives. The performance of a level 1 array tends to be faster on reads and slower on writes compared to a single drive, but if either drive fails, no data is lost. This is a good entry-level redundant system, since only two drives are required; however, since one drive is used to store a duplicate of the data, the cost per megabyte is high. There was (is?) a bug in Compressor2 using VBR. Do a search of the archives in this, the DVD SP, and maybe the compression forums. It’s been mentioned a bunch.
It’s also been discussed a lot on the Apple boards. Unless it’s been fixed, then CBR is the answer for now.

The only speed tests I’ve come across for *any* SATA cardbus cards is the FWDepot card and the Seritek card, both tested by barefeats.com.
There seems to be a problem with them in terms of sustained throughput. Barefeats speculated that it could be the 32bit bandwidth,
or possibly the drivers (a little tweaking may help).I’ve been waiting for a Raidable (new word!) SATA cardbus card for my PB for a long time. Unless someone has a link to another test, barefeats.com is the only
source for their speeds. And unless Seritek changes something between the pre-release tests and actual release, the
card won’t reach 128MBs, even if Bob wants it to. 🙂

Barefeats tested FWDepot’s SATA cardbus card in a PB a while ago, with beta drivers, though. The performance with one drive was 60MB reads
and 77MB writes (sustained). Two drives used independently drove performance down. Raid0 brought performance down to 32MBs.

They tested Seritek’s card and found better performance, but lousy performance if you had an October 2005 PB compared to the 2004 PB.
In either PB they didn’t come close to 128MB, 109MB reds and 97 writes (sustained).
