Check out this barefeats.com test for the exact setup you’re asking about. The 2 channel performance is much better: 76MB reads vs 113MB and 52MB writes vs 88MB

Darren’s point is that the signal coming *out* from FCP through his IO is hotter than +4db. Sure his mixer can handle +4db, but that’s not his problem. The problem/question is it’s getting more than +6db. Again, his point is that he’s forced to lower a hot signal, not whether he needs a mixer.
Darren, I haven’t noticed this on my IO LA here in NTSC land. I’ll check it as soon as I get onto a system.

    [Bob Zelin] “you state –
I have a mixer (spirit folio), but all this will do is take a now overmodulated signal and reduce it in my mixer

Sir – you take the +4dB analog source (your Beta VTR, etc.) and send this into the mixer. You can then ATTENUATE (drop) the level of the analog signal before it goes into your AJA I/O box. No overmodulation – no distortion.

Ready now to finish your job and dump back to your VTR? Take the output of your AJA I/O and send it into your mixer. Send the output of the mixer into your VTR. You can now use the mixer to easily set the levels of the VTR, by simply moving the faders on your mixer. The Soundcraft Spirit Folio easily can handle a +4dBu signal (it can handle a lot more than that without distortion).”

“Just got FCP 5 and an Aja IO box today. Upon checking the Inputs and Outputs I have noticed that the audio level out from a -18dB (Pal) test tone generated in FCP out of the IO straight to a set of PPM’s reads over 6. This should read 4. There is no way of controlling the analogue output of the IO as far as I can tell. Does anyone have a solution for this?”

Ditto what Bogie said. As a recovering M100 user, I can say that the best way to learn is to rip out the M100 card and be forced to do a real project with FCP. I waited until I had a non-critical deadline for a project delivery, and jumped in with both feet. It meant sitting with 3 FCP books on my lap as I edited, but full immersion really helped me. I also am a fan of FCP for Dummies. I have 5 or 6 FCP books, but when first starting, the Dummies book had the quickest. simplest answers to keep things moving, at least for the basics. The Peachpit book is my second favorite (actually my favorite once out of the total newbie phase). Diane Weynand’s book (the official Apple book) doesn’t fit my learning style, so it’s my least used book.

Graeme Nattress’ filters come to mind first:

Magicbullet and Cinelook/Cinemotion also come to mind.
Maybe check out Ken Stone’s site too:

BTW, if you do a simple Google search, maybe type film effects video, you’ll get a bunch of hits.

I should have added that this works if the clip is in the timeline.

Or you can select the clip, do an Apple L which will de-link the audio and video (you’ll see that the underline below the clip name will disappear), delete the offending clip, and do another Apple-L to re-link the good audio and video.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to get everyone to spell the word edit in all lower case letters? 🙂
    Thanks,

Ok Eric and Ron, here’s what’s going on now. Any words with Ed in it (and only those that match my name *exactly*, meaning capital E, lower case d, show up in red. Also, any other Ed, for example, Ed Stevens, shows the Ed in red.
    FYI,
