August 4, 2013 at 5:25 pm in reply to: shame that velocity envelope doesn’t keep audio in sync!hi steve. thanks yes, definitely, especially my client. she works with me because i’m very particular about how the end result sounds. video was filmed by others elsewhere (on the island of Cyprus) with sound that was a bit poor… in places I had to blend my studio version with the live sound , (for the audience response)making sync even more important. ed

August 4, 2013 at 3:22 pm in reply to: shame that velocity envelope doesn’t keep audio in sync!could do that. but the backing track is at a set, known, tempo. if I stretched the studio audio to match the video lip movements, it would sound terrible (even when moving things around in milliseconds). i’m mainly an audio producer, so that would be out of the question. the problem is simply that live singers don’t sing a song exactly the same way twice, even when the music is identical. fact of life! so velocity envelope is the only practical way in vegas to smoothly match the video to the “perfect” audio… if only sony would give me the audio matched up, a job like this would be a lot faster. tip for anyone having to do this; put markers at key points where the mouth movement is obvious. place velocity points on and very close before and after the marker. that way you can always check section by section that your sync is good. another way to do this is of course get the singer to re-sing the vocals to picture, dubbing over what they did “live”. have done this before but wasn’t an option in this case. ed

August 4, 2013 at 1:16 pm in reply to: shame that velocity envelope doesn’t keep audio in sync!thanks phil. yes, you’re absolutely right that doing it that way does keep the audio/video in sync, but then i’d have to chop the clips into separate sections and run the risk of visible joins or ghostly fades when playing back. I use vasst timewarp when I need to timestretch video because it is vey smooth if i’m dealing with individual clips at a constant rate. the velocity envelope tool is good because the speed control works on a single clip without splitting… ed

just had a quick try. insert these plugins; convolution kernel. use “find edges” preset. then insert sony black and white (unless you want coloured edges). then Gaussian blur. adjust to get close to what you want. ed

Vegas has the best audio facilities. I’m mainly an audio guy and I would even use vegas for cd authoring instead of sony cd architect because it allows use of vst plugins. only reason I don’t is that cd architect is better for moving/rearranging track lists. ed

looks good. the only small point; the bit of wall inside her arm/body space under the hand is still sharp. would anybody notice that during playback? have a look and see. might need more work on the mask… ed

thanks. I hadn’t noticed soft contrast (I think I tend to overlook some of the sony ones). ed

bad news ; been trying to get sidechain compressor to work in vegas 12 pro 64 bit via jbridge. interface opens but there are errors reported and no audio processing. must be a jbridge issue. it might work in 32 bit but I see no 32 bit download… I used to use it in earlier versions of vegas 32 bit so if you can get demos of sidechain and jbridge, try before buying. ed

another approach; newblue fx has a plugin called rack focus in one of the video essentials series. very easy to create a horizontal or vertical area of sharpness with definable blur outside the range. kind of thing you could do manually but the plugin is very quick and easy to use. personally, I would try masks unless the clip is long. ed
