[Neal Barlow] “…they were talking about how excited they were that AVID 6 now allowed them to have 5.1 in their mixes natively so that when they are screening their dailies and early edits that it would start to have the mix closer to what the final would be like. Isn’t this something that Vegas has done since version 4? … I feel like everyone else gets excited when other software does things that Vegas can already do, or is this really something new to the industry? It’s like everyone getting excited about Final Cut X when it could unsync audio and video. Is there something I am missing?”
What you’re missing is that AVID, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere have been in the Stone Age for years!!! They have subscribed to a workflow that requires everyone to convert their video footage to a certain format, and conform all of their video manually to match their project, and they are amazed when they get any new features that eliminates the drudgery that they call “editing”.
Vegas has had most of the new features coming out in these NLE’s for years and years now. FCP X editors are amazed that they can now use a handle to make a fade on an audio clip (they still can’t do it for video) and Vegas has been doing this since Vegas Video 2! I’m sure when they get the ability to fade video without applying a transition there will be much rejoicing and announcements about this fantastic new feature.
I remember a VASST training session 6 years ago in NYC where Douglas Spotted Eagle was dropping video of different frame rates on the timeline while it was playing and the Final Cut Pro editors in the audience were salivating. Then he dropped an animated GIF file on the timeline and it started playing and I think they pee’d their pants. They thought it was voodoo or something and kept telling him, “you can’t do that you have to conform first”. I think a few of them actually bought a copy of Vegas after that session. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing or how antiquated their current workflow was with FCP.
So you and every other Vegas editor haven’t missed anything. It’s the rest of the video editing world that is missing out and just catching up. I laugh a lot when I read the “new” features in AVID, FCP, and PP that Vegas has had since the beginning. Enjoy the laughter, the jokes on them. 😉
