My first thought is that you used some third-party plug-in in 2.0 that you don’t have in CS3, but that usually doesn’t prevent a project from loading.
One thing to try is: create a new project in CS3 and import the 2.0 project.

As Harm suggests, your external hard drive may not have the required throughput for smooth playback.

As a test, set your camocrder to DV mode, create a new test DV project and capture. Does the capture succeed?

Render and final image quality are not affected by screen resolution.
A higher screen resolution simply gives you more screen real-estate. (DPI being equal.)

The trial version does not support mpeg formats of any kind. I’m guessing your AVI file uses an mpeg based codec. Use a utility like GSpot to determine the codecs used in your AVI files.

The “source view” has several purposes, but is intended for working with a specific clip, while the “program view” shows you what your timeline contains.

Convert the original mpeg clip to a DV AVI file and import that for editing.
