  • In FCPX you can also use multiple masks to either add or subtract from each other, and that can help create more complex shapes.

I jumped straight on this new feature to see how it compared to Motion VFX’s mMorphCut.
Simple answer, it’s horrible, as it freeze frames the outgoing and incoming and morphs between them.

mMorphCut keeps the footage moving and works instantly with seemingly no processing or rendering.
You can trim a frame here or there to try different morph points and it just works.

September 29, 2015 at 6:19 pm in reply to: FCPX or Compressor for best quality MP4/MKV video output?

You could try exporting a proper master file in ProRes, then encode it an h264 compliant file using Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip.

They use x264 which has been proven to be the best quality h264 encoder available.
The software is all free, and with Handbrake you can even try some h265 encoding (if you want to to see where the future of compression is likely to take us!).

It is possible to get x264 to work in Compressor, but for my master encodes I prefer to run compression through an external app.

  • It’s an old thread I know, I know!

I normally stick to trusty 16GB cards, but recently tried some 32GB UHS1 SDHC class cards in my EX1 and got formatting errors.

I spoke to Sony and went to the following page: https://www.sony.co.uk/pro/product/broadcast-products-camcorders-xdcam/pmw-ex1/support/

I was on v1.11 firmware from way back when I bought the trusty EX1. Anyway, the latest 1.3 binary on there includes a nice Mac app which seemed to perform the update to 1.3 in two stages.

Once updated the app asks to be exited. At that point I was stuck. I remove the USB cable and disconnect the power supply. I then plugged the power in again and it rebooted first time.

All working well now with a couple of different 32GB cards in the camera.

    Thanks!

Still slightly out of your budget, but a great camera is the Sony a6000.
Proper focus peaking, zebras, and a clean HDMI out.
You’ll need an external audio recorder though.

Bill, of course you are right, he may mean a gap clip stuck to the end of the Project, but I gave the benefit of the doubt.

I assume it’s the bug that I sometimes see where the timeline shows longer then it actually is, sometimes buy a few frames and sometimes by many hours. Exporting the project creates a file with unexplained black at the end. A copy, delete, paste normally fixes it for me. Has anyone else seen this bug?

Hopefully we’ll get a reply to say what fixed it…

EDIT. It’s just happened to me again. 20 frames of nothing at the end of a timeline.

It’s a bug. I used to see it quite often but not recently.

    Try Command-A, Command-C, Delete, Command-V
    Any good?

If not make a new sequence and paste in there instead.

    I’m using a 280x ( the new version of a 7970 IIRC) with FCPX.
The 290x still isn’t properly supported.
You’ll get more detailed info at Tony’s Hackintosh site for sure.

I had a 670, but it seemed crippled under OSX.
The 280x is cheap, quiet, efficient and fast.

Personally I keep clip skimming turned on, when I move back to the timeline I dip the cursor over a timeline icon and the viewer switches back. Not perfect workaround, but works OK for me.

  • The EX1 is a great camera, very very sharp. But it has an IR problem, lumpy zooms at low speed and a weak tripod plate.

Quite good in low light and even with 12dB of gain in and the shutter off. The EX1R is the same, but may be above the budget you’ve mentioned.

    Perhaps a secondhand EX1 or EX3?
I might be selling my EX1 sometime for an FS100 or 700, but I’d like to keep it.

It can be tricky handheld for a long time, but I manage OK.
You’ll need the CVP ElCheapo shoulder mount for an EX1.
