  • Yeah, I thought wmv as a valid format had gone the way of bitmaps 😉

No, I do have the DNxHR etc. codec. Prelude lets me choose it, but when I send it to AME to decode the files all throw an error message saying that it’s not a valid codec, even though I can send a file from Premiere Pro to AME to encode as DNx… and it works with no problem. I’m not missing the codec. AME just doesn’t seem to accept the command to encode as DNx from Prelude. Computers….grrrrrrrrr. 😉

  • Ah, thanks for that, Chris. One problem though. I can export a file as DNxHD in MXF (located in Format > DNxHD MXF OP1a) through Premiere Pro or AME, but I downloaded a trial of Prelude just this week specifically to do mass transcoding and, oddly enough, it would let me transcode in that codec. I tried another suggested codec (wmv) but those files were just as laggy as the .mov files straight from my camera.

Normally I’ll google to find out why something like that happens, but this time I just dropped it. Now I’ll look into it further. Thanks again.

  • Thanks, Andrew. I basically knew all of that. I’m an amateur, I make videos for myself using a consumer PC, which is why I’m always looking for ways to cut down on file sizes, and by extension render times. So I guess the only way to do so would be to render edited clips in a lossless codec and then use those in my project?

Oh, ok. BG Renderer, by any chance?

  • So does that mean I’m only rendering (encoding) the metadata that remains in the timeline? Am I making the file size to be rendered lighter? I know you prefer I figure things out for myself. Just thinking out loud. I guess I can import a video file, export it to “media” and check the file size, then cut off a chunk of the file and export to media again and compare file sizes. Thanks, brain! And David 😉

If you want to do one at a time you can just adjust the markers on the timeline (the two little blue knoblets) to the sections you want to render, just don’t “Trim to comp”. When done with 00:00 to 00:10 then move the markers to 00:10 to 00:20, etc.

Why is this thread first in line when the last response was 4 years ago? Oh well, being that I’m a green screen enthusiast I thought I’d add something. Now, I know my green screens are a challenge since I have so little room to work, but I’m currently doing another one of my short films, and I’m using some of those green screen clips on youtube. The background is perfectly smooth, bright green, yet I still have problems getting a good key. Way too much work considering how good the key is.

Could it be because of youtube’s compression?

  • OK, so basically I wasted my time. Thought for sure I was gonna be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in technology 😉

  • Thanks, Chris. Does it make any difference that my camera, the Nikon D5500, uses 4:2:2 rather than 4:2:0? I know it IS 8 bit. Is the bit size more important than the 4:2:2?

You didn’t have to thank him in stereo! 😉
