I’ve the same problem. I appears again, again, again…. No solutions actually?

  • Hi Dave,
no, if I import many differents .DNG file, every time AE opens Camera RAW. (I’ve AE CC).

The problem is an other… if you open a .dng file, make a setting in Camera RAW and than open the same file again, to see for exemple the difference, AE open it in Camera RAW with the SAME setting of the first…! So, you have to return in Camaera Raw and reset to default camera Raw, to have again original file.

A good workflow, I think, is to import the first .dng file, don’t set anything in Camera RAW and rename it (something like ORIGINAL). Than, import again (or duplicate it), rename with a different name (something like CC or GRADED) and make CC setting in Camera RAW.

  • Great Todd,
    many thanks!

  • Wow, finally a great solutions!
    Very well!
But I make this work now in C4D by Camera Calibrator and Projection Man. You have total control on camera projection and you can export all in AE to composite. Really easer.

    Hallo everybody,
anybody has idea what I’m talking about? It’s a crucial argument…

    Hallo everybody,
I read Color management infos suggested and reading also many others articles about. At the end, if I have right understand, these are the right steps to work in Linear Color Space in After Effects:

Create a Project and set in Project setting / Color settings
Working Space sRGB and able Linearize Working Space.
That means that all your imported footage will be linereized to work in a unique and efficient colour space (Linear). At the same time, After Effect SHOW your compositing in sRGB! But it doesn’t work in sRGB!

Therefore, if you want to see really in which colour space you’re working (linear in this case), you have to use a linear LUT simply following what J T suggested above: “You can apply a LUT by going to Effects-Utility-Apply Colour LUT”. By the way, I didn’t find any LUT on my AE CC, anybody does know where can I find it? Thx!
At the end, it seems that, contrary to what happens in Nuke, in AE you do not have to correct your non-linear footage imported.
But now, I would understand if what I said is right or not …

    Hi Dave,
I’d like ALWAYS work in 32 bpc for many reasons.

For 3d render pass I use OpenEXR 32bit.
If I use photo (still BG for example) I try always to use RAW format, but I’m not sure if in Photoshop have to change photo color space to HDTV Rec.709 or if I can let my photo in ordinary sRGB IEC61966-2.1, please say me!).
If I use video (actually I’ve a Canon 60D Quicktime / H264, and Panasonic 151 – AVCHD / H264) I’m not sure if and in which format have i to convert video footage to better composite with Open EXR format render passes. Maybe Pro Res 442 HQ or 444 should be good. I really don’t know…

    Thanks for your reply!

  • Good Adam,
I see also you can select an object in scene un render only it just enabling “Active Object Only” on Render Settings/Option. So, if put in a Object Buffer via Compositing tag a mesh and than, if you choise your render passes, you can render only the alpha channel of the object and ours own specific passes.
Unfortunately, you can batch that process and you must every time and for every mesh to specify which kind of object passes you need…

  • Okay Adam,
you mean that the reflection – as well as others render passes like Shadows, Specular, refraction… – have not Alpha channel?

  • So. before you make the regular render passes diffuse, shadows,Specular, refraction and reflection (And AO…) , than delete tham and reset Render setting only with a Object Buffer. If I’m right…
(but then, which is the utility of Buffer Object…?)
