Linear Workflow and LUT in AE

    Hallo everybody,
I’m starting to use AE in Linear workflow to composite live action with CGI.
My render pass imported are of course linear and I know I ‘ve to set the correct Color space in Project Settings:
Set the working space to sRGB
Check the linearise colour space checkbox.
In this way all my job in AE will be done under a single color space (Linear). What I didn’t find is the possibility to work with a LUT to see correctly colour and tonality.
Shortly, I didn’t understand if in AE this Gamma correction is automatic ( you see in RBG but you work in Linear) or if there is a way to set up a RGB LUT to visualize your job correctly (for our eyes…) ?
    Help please!

You can apply a LUT by going to Effects-Utility-Apply Color LUT

    Hi Dave,
I’d like ALWAYS work in 32 bpc for many reasons.

For 3d render pass I use OpenEXR 32bit.
If I use photo (still BG for example) I try always to use RAW format, but I’m not sure if in Photoshop have to change photo color space to HDTV Rec.709 or if I can let my photo in ordinary sRGB IEC61966-2.1, please say me!).
If I use video (actually I’ve a Canon 60D Quicktime / H264, and Panasonic 151 – AVCHD / H264) I’m not sure if and in which format have i to convert video footage to better composite with Open EXR format render passes. Maybe Pro Res 442 HQ or 444 should be good. I really don’t know…

    Thanks for your reply!

    Hallo everybody,
I read Color management infos suggested and reading also many others articles about. At the end, if I have right understand, these are the right steps to work in Linear Color Space in After Effects:

Create a Project and set in Project setting / Color settings
Working Space sRGB and able Linearize Working Space.
That means that all your imported footage will be linereized to work in a unique and efficient colour space (Linear). At the same time, After Effect SHOW your compositing in sRGB! But it doesn’t work in sRGB!

Therefore, if you want to see really in which colour space you’re working (linear in this case), you have to use a linear LUT simply following what J T suggested above: “You can apply a LUT by going to Effects-Utility-Apply Colour LUT”. By the way, I didn’t find any LUT on my AE CC, anybody does know where can I find it? Thx!
At the end, it seems that, contrary to what happens in Nuke, in AE you do not have to correct your non-linear footage imported.
But now, I would understand if what I said is right or not …
