  • Heya,

As Noah pointed out, you can use demo versions to make a determination. A few things to keep in mind: because it is GPU-based, the Motion version runs extremely fast. Fast, as in real-time keying of HDV (1080) on my system. You can get reeeaaal used to that sort of speed. It is, however, slightly more limited than the AE version: it doesn’t have the light wrap feature (not always important). As cheap as they are, I would buy both. They pay for themselves quite quickly.

    Good luck!

For short-form work, it’s great. Having the app stay interactive and allowing me to leave it playing while making changes is very useful. I do miss having a flowgraph, though, when things get a little less linear 🙂

    Hey Jeff,

That’s not ominous; it’s how every crash log begins. Scroll down through the log and you’ll see a list of each Thread (starting at 0). Look for the one that begins like “Thread 5: Crashed”. Then post that thread block (a chunk of lines). That tells you where the application was when it died.

As for running 2.0 vs. 2.1…crashing on launch is almost certainly because of an installation-related problem. Are you sure that you have the Pro Application Updates (info at https://www.apple.com/support/motion/) installed? They come down via Software Update, or they can be downloaded from the Motion registration incentives page.

    Hey Jeff,

It sounds like you have a bad install, or missing one of the Pro Apps Support updates. Try running the Console app (found in /Applications/Utilities/) before you launch, and see what it spits out when Motion dies. It may indicate what files are missing (if that’s the problem).

Also, is the crash reporter appearing when it dies? If so, look through the log and look for the crashed thread; that might also shed some light on the problem.

    Hey Rene,

I’ve been a regular AE user since 3.0. I occasionally dally in Combustion, but I haven’t spent too much time in it. I’ve spent a lot more time doing compositing than motion graphics, using tools like AE, Commotion (back in the day), Chalice, Rayz, Shake, Cineon, etc.

I usually find something good when perusing the Design In Motion site https://www.uemedia.net/CPC/designinmotion/index.shtml.

Some of my favorite stuff comes out of MK12 https://media2.mk12.com/mk12_version_five.html. Check out the In House Work section (on the right). The 2003 piece “Brazil Inspired: MachoBox” is one of the best works of motion graphics I’ve ever seen.

    Hey Joshua,

There are a number of ways to do a vignette, but the quickest and easiest is the…wait for it…Vignette filter! You can find it in the Filters->Stylize category. It allows you to set the vignette size and falloff, then specify if you want the outer area darkened, blurred, desaturated, etc. Keep in the mind that the slider range for the blur isn’t the max value: you can crank up much higher.

Just a tip: if you opened the user manual (found in the Help menu) and typed ‘vignette’ into the search, you would’ve found exactly what you needed. Try searching the manual, in the future.

    Good luck!

    Heya Mike,

The Basic 3D filter does just what you’re asking. Look in Distorion->Basic 3D.

    Good luck!

    Heya Paulo,

Motion just might not be guessing the alpha type. Go into the Media tab (in the Project Panel), select the media, and adjust the Alpha Type popup in the Inspector. See if that does the trick.

A handy shortcut for getting to the Media settings is to select the object (in the Canvas, Layers List or Timeline) and press Shift+F.

  • Hey Kathryn,

I’m not sure I follow you correctly. Enabling Record (toggling on the record button) has never caused a keyframe to be created. Changing any parameter (moving something, etc), AFTER enabling Record, causes keyframes to be created.

I can do the following in Motion 2.0.1:

    1. Position an object at its starting position (Record off).
    2. Turn on Record (you can do this after moving the playhead, doesn’t matter).
    3. Move the playhead to the next point in time I want a keyframe at.
    4. Position the object to where I want it to end up.
    5. Repeat steps 3&4 until animation is complete.
    6. Turn off Record to stop creating keyframes when making changes.

Doing this creates keyframes as I go, starting at frame 1 (which gets set automatically).

    Were you describing something different?
