I created a new program on an external Seagate 1tb drive from material on that drive of 104 events from photos When it was rendered it crashed. I moved it to c drive and sony rendered it ok. I reduced the number of events (Pictures) to 90 to make sure I did’t miscount and moved it back to the external drive and it rendered ok. Unless I made a mistake I looks like Sony cant handle anything on an external drive over 100 events.
Western Digital is going to call but I will tell them their drive is not the cause of this instance. Today I was working on a Seagate 1tb drive so WD is not the problem. Both drives have crashed. Or the size is not the problem. If I had nothing to do I could use a smaller drive but at the moment I have other things to do. I don’t think a smaller drive would make any difference. I am amazed that I got this kind of response from Western Digital so in the future if possible my purchases will be western Digital drives. Thanks for your help. You really helped a lot.

Back up is what I bought it for but I am stuck with it now. Thanks for your help. It made me analyze the situation and decide to check out the HD causing the problem.

Problem solved. I moved the files to my C drive and ran the program there OK. Apparently the external drive effected the program somehow and it crashed. The drive is a new Western Digital, My Book, Essentials 3TB. I’m not very happy about this because I paid 149 for it and any expectations that Office Depot would help me contact WD for a solution was useless. Support from a HD manufacturer has been non existent for me in the past so I don’t expect anything here. But I will give it a try. Not using the drive for Vegas is not what I bought it for. A little more info. The HP is a 32 bit machine with a windows experience index of 3.3 The Lenovo is a 64 bit computer. 4 gig of memory the HP has 3 gig or ram.

The current lap top is an HP G60-4400 dual processor T4300 both 2.1 gig of course. I have a 500 gig hard drive. Toshiba driver mk3252gsx ata device The OS is windows 7 home premium. Which was upgraded from windows xp. The other one is a lenovo windows 7 just a few months old
The external HD is a 3 terabite new WD My Book 1140 usb Which has about 800 gig loaded from other HD’s It is running on usb2 but could run on usb3 which neither computer has unfortunately.
When the problem surfaced I could not make the lenovo work so I moved the external hard drive from the lenovo and connected it to the HP. I was happy because I thought it did the first project ok and it was fixed. But I could not do it ok again on the HP. This would indicate to me the external HD has effected it some way. Smaller programs of this type seem to work ok at least if about 16 minutes or less. I had to rebuild some of the projects on the HP because some of the pictures were on the Lenovo C drive. Almost everything is on the external HD on the HP
The problem is this. Depending upon the size of the project It might go to 50 to 65 percent of a less than 40 minute project. It can crash in two ways. One it crashes and it goes to desktop display. Or it goes to a grayout and says windows has stopped working. (or is it vegas pretty sure it is windows) Both times Vegas says it has to be restored. Windows looks for a solution which it never finds, or will ever find in my opinion. 🙂 Of course I could put a project on another HD but I could spend the rest of my life looking for a fix, Everything is on this drive.

I am certainly glad to hear that. It is now just finding what the problem is. These were just normally installed Platium premium pro 9 on two different computers in the default mode. If default will not work where do I start? I want them to work and not do a “work around” the problem. Am I right about help from Sony?
I think all files are on one external hard drive although the first program was on a couple. It reacted a little differently. -
I am convinced that Sony Vegas can not handle projects this size or complicated. At least I cant. I know that isn’t saying much. I have two legal programs and neither can render it if it gets over 30 minutes or so. The total length is only about 40 minutes with perhaps 100 stills, 7 or 8 short video excerpts and some music. The guys that wrote the program knows but other than this forum what help will Sony give? I may be wrong on this but it seems that if you go to Sony they just send you to a forum. I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to get this project on DVD and that information what size it can handle would have saved me a of of time. It is a wonderful program but I cant make it work on this. If any of the regulars here on the forum has contact with actual people at Sony please ask them what the score is on this. My bet is Sony cant handle it.

To clarify and not leave confusion I have found that the address bar at the top of the page in vegas is not the version in the time line. What the situation is regarding “save as” and “save” is not clear at the moment as it is late and I am too tired to completely figure it out right now but it has to do with ” save as” and “save” when backing up the program. The one selected is not changed in the address bar.

Reinstalling vegas did not help

I opened vegas and set everything default but got the same result. Opens with notice that un-recompression not required. This feature is enabled like the other computer. I have another laptop with another version of vegas installed and it made a movie ok. As a some of the photos I want are on the other c drive so I need this one to work. What do I do re-install vegas ?
