  • [Jeremy Garchow] “Drop vs non-drop frame?”

That was my first thought, too.

    One way to check this:
    – open your project in FCP, change the ‘Time Display’ preference (under General tab) to Frames
    – check the bottom center of the interface to get a total frame count
    – open your exported file in QT7, and click on the time display in the lower left corner – change to Frame Number

If those two numbers match, it’s a timecode issue. If they don’t…. well… that’s another kettle of fish!

  • It’s not so much that you have to make those decisions prior to edit, but more about preparing your media to make those decisions quickly in the timeline.

For example – you have camera audio and zoom sync audio… typically, I would create synchronized or multicam clips that contain all of the audio. I can then choose my preferred audio track in the browser and not have to think about it while roughing in my sequence with the skimmer.

It seems daunting, but I’ll tell you, once I got the hang of it I couldn’t imagine why I’d want to go back to tracks.

[Max Nathalie] “I have imported media (that is located on the external hard drive) via symlinks only to my FCPX project (also located on the external hard drive)”

How, exactly, did you do this?

I’d expect a Wimpy check… he made the promise last week already! ;^)

June 30, 2016 at 6:16 pm in reply to: 3D rotation on text in 2D mode

[Bret Williams] “Has anyone noticed this? Every since they added 3D text and the new controls to rotate the text in 3D space, you can’t dial in the rotation or reset it anywhere that I can find. Does this exist somewhere?

When I turn off 3D text mode the 3D rotation remains. Which does come in handy. Unless of course I don’t want any 3D rotation. Resetting the 3D panel doesn’t affect it either.

And bizarrely enough, I’ve found that even though the 3D rotation controls are hidden in 2D text mode, they’re still there. If you put click where they would be in 3D mode, the text rotates just the same, even if you’ve never turned on 3D. “

Ran into this today… opened a project I’d been experimenting with awhile ago, and wanted to reset 3D positions.

    Submitting feedback!

June 27, 2016 at 11:05 pm in reply to: .mts (AVCHD) pains me

[James Taylor] “So what did you end up with for media?”

    Clip #1.mov, Clip #2.mov, etc…

[James Taylor] “At the moment, I use clipwrap to wrap everything in an .mov file. I archive the originals. I then import the wrapped files into FCPX. That keeps my libraries as small as possible.”

That’s exactly how I was using it. I want to keep everything external, and I don’t want or need to transcode everything.

Because we do so much media sharing between jobs, I create one Library per volume and then each new job is an Event in that Library. Makes things easy to share, keeps the job folders separate and clean, and I can put 50+ jobs on my RAID before I need to move stuff off. I can’t justify one drive per job, I’ve already got too many… it’s just too much hardware.

I don’t particularly want to open FCPX prefs every time I import, but with AVCHD I now have to. Generally, crew transfers footage from cards to portable HDD (one folder per card). I store this original media by job (in a job folder with a name that makes it easy to find).

Now I’ll have a ‘Final Cut Original Media’ folder in each job, with another folder inside with a date stamp. Date stamps. They’re nice and all, but when I’m searching for a 2-year-old edit, I search by job name and/or number. How the fig would I remember what date it was shot? So, more Finder management.

[James Taylor] “When you import the AVCHD files into FCPX, do you just have the one set of files? Or do you end up with originals and the wrapped files? Is the file size for the library double?”

Generally speaking: untouched original camera files and re-wrapped .mov where necessary for edit. All external.

June 27, 2016 at 7:07 pm in reply to: .mts (AVCHD) pains me

I was able to test this with an FS7… ClipWrap mangled the spanned clips on a simple re-wrap (lost a few frames at the transition point), while FCPX brought everything in perfectly.

    Bye bye, ClipWrap!

[Darren Roark] “Is there camera file metadata that clipwrap can extract that FCP X doesn’t?”

I can test this later today – the camera I have on hand is the Canon HF G10. The single most annoying issue with this camera is that every clip starts at 00:00:00:00…

    Will report back with results.

[Darren Roark] “It does the same thing AFAIK that clipwrap does by wrapping the original media in a .MOV QT container. (Something I had to do with CW in the FCP 7> days.”

ClipWrap will also add a bunch of metadata, and transcodes the AAC audio to PCM. Maybe it’s the audio conversion that makes it ‘friendlier’… ??
