Something else mentioned upthread is that the video is being used for training… time for an anecdote:

We have a client running newish versions of Windows with an older version of Office (2007). When we deliver video to this client, we ask if they plan to link the file(s) to PowerPoint slides, which is a common scenario for training. If so, we output nasty old MPEG1. PPT 2007 will mangle .mp4 video in all manner of interesting ways, while MPEG1 will play perfectly. On the same machine, Windows Media Player will play back the .mp4 file just fine.

This is the one and only reason I keep a copy of Sorenson Squeeze active, as Compressor is really lacking in the MPEG1 department. We’ve tried various flavors of .wmv, but have had mixed results.

Are you using the Export panel in FCPX, or are you using a Share Destination / Compressor preset?

When exporting mp4 from the Export panel, FCPX generates a file with more than 2x the necessary bitrate for a quality encode. I’ve had much better luck with Compressor presets, setup as a Share destinations.

To really get to the bottom of it though, it would be useful to get info about the client’s playback hardware and software.

Click in the timeline to make it the active space, then:
Cmd – Zoom Out
Cmd + Zoom In
Shift Z Fit All

Also, there are controls under the little film icon on the far right, next to the Effects and Transitions icons.

FWIW – I used SendToX just yesterday to migrate a few projects from PP and FCP7. Did the translation on my 10.3 workstation and everything worked as expected. My only complaint is that Freeze Frames come through as black generators. Oh, and titles…. don’t forget those! ;^)

You’ll need to route the PP XML through an app called ‘SendToX’ first. Preferably on the same machine that has your FCP 10.3 installation.

I gotta say… and I am way on-board with FCPX… having a tool that could open legacy project files and facilitate translation to X would be high on my list of ‘stuff to buy’. I’ve got hundreds of legacy projects dating back to 2003, most of which have multiple sequences. I get random requests to go back into the wayback machine and pull stuff out – maybe a couple of times per year. There’s no way to know which ones are the ‘important ones’, and there are too many to simply export all of them. Because of this, I keep a cheese grater MacPro on 10.9 with the full legacy Studio installed and stable with all of my legacy plugins fxscripts, etc.

It’s not a thing that keeps me up at night, but it sure would be nice. For me. Among other things… ;^)

I would also highly recommend adding RAM if you can. 8GB, even with an SSD, will slow you down a fair bit.

IMO, best option would be to fill the frame with the photos. Barring that, you could use a generator or a solid color still image as a matte…
