I’ve only seen it happen after moving projects from one library to another (on different drives), or when moving a library and it’s media to another drive and re-linked everything. All media re-links without error, but a project or two will show the warning.

I’ll see this a couple of times per year, and I’m moving stuff around regularly. One of these days I’ll export an XML and see what I can see.

I have noticed this, too. If I don’t see any missing media and my project has the warning, I park the playhead at the end of the edit and add a gap clip – poof! – warning gone, Undo Gap, all good again.

Well that’s the rub – I didn’t edit the template between instances. It appeared to be working correctly in Motion and in Final Cut. Even the preview scrub did the right thing. So I did all instances of that template in one pass, and it behaved / played back as intended. It was only on export that things went sideways (exported files were bad, timeline still looked perfect). Then I relaunched FCPX and saw the same problem in the timeline.

Originally, I had the rectangle and text in the same group, with ‘align to’ applied to the text (targeting the rectangle) and ‘move in / move out’ applied to the rectangle. After I put the text in it’s own group and applied the ‘align to’ behavior to the group, it stopped losing it’s mind.

It was a post by Fox Mahoney on the Apple forums that gave me the key to unlock the puzzle.

Found the answer… in the context of FCPX plugin design, ‘Align To’ behaviors do not always work correctly when applied to text. Put the text in it’s own Group, and apply ‘Align To’ to the group containing the text. All is well.

What a stupid bug.

I’ve got a similar UI choppiness – playhead redraws about once per second during playback, but not always (maybe 40% of the time). Like you, video plays fine. Unlike you, I’m not using any secondary video out, only my primary monitor.

I’ve not found anything that works quite like DVDSP, which is what I prefer.

I have the dubious distinction of caring for an extensive client archive, and for that reason I keep an old machine running with FCS3… so any call for DVD (it still happens occasionally) has me back in the old neighborhood. My workflow started with self-contained ProRes export from FCP, then to Compressor for the streams, then into DVDSP to build it out.

If this is something you’ll need to do more than a couple of times, you could likely talk someone on this forum into selling you a decomissioned copy for cheap.

In my case, I’ve got to park the playhead on each instance of the Flow transition for it to analyze and render properly. I’ve gotten into the habit of doing this so I can preview the transition. After that, it’s fine.

How much free space have you got on your system drive? If you’re low on space and trying to render a big file, weird things can happen.

Does it ever shut down / reboot during edit?

It isn’t the media though… this is only about your User / Motion Templates folder, and how your custom Titles, Transitions, and Effects are displayed in the FCPX interface.

The problem, as I understand it, is Brendan and Chris (and me and others) create new or modified effects / transitions / generators in Motion. After you’ve done this a few times, you realize a different grouping would be more efficient. So you go into your Motion Templates folder and reorganize a bit. Afterward, everything shows up just the way you want it in FCPX, perfectly usable, but some of your projects show your effects / titles / generators as Offline (even though they aren’t).

I’ve rearranged my custom templates twice (‘cuz I’m stupid), and fortunately haven’t run into this problem.

This is an issue with the way FCPX stores paths to your effects in the XML, not a media management or workflow issue.
