October 17, 2014 at 11:29 pm in reply to: Adobe Premiere Pro CC with Avid Unity StorageI’m running Unity 5.0 48TB’s and tried using Premiere Pro 6.0 for the first time today running off a Unity partition. Lot’s of crashes and not much luck. Just getting into the nitty gritty of it but wondering if anyone has successfully been doing it. I made separate partitions for projects and media.
Any suggestions? Not seeing much on the boards concerning this.

God, how Ioved my A-62. We created magic with that thing. I miss it still, the feel of the trackball in my hand. Thanks for the flashback.

I’ve got just the opposite problem. I was given two graphics by a client to import into an Avid Media Composer 5.0 project.
My artists normally give me 720×486 out of AE and that works fine.
One of the graphics the client gave me was 720×486 and it came into the Avid slightly anamorphic. The other was 654×486 and it was correct. They both look fine in QT.
I’m assuming it’s a square vs non-square pixel setting in AE but I’ve never been super clear on what it should be.
What should I tell my client to do differently? I have to be diplomatic in this approach.
Any suggestions on what they/I should do differently?
Thanks,
Doug

March 24, 2010 at 10:17 pm in reply to: 23.98 footage but need to work in a 30i projectYou should not have to transcode. In fact on the Avid forum their expert discourages it. You should not drop any frames. If you add effects, and you can, you will have to render them. That’s why you should set your render setting to advanced.
Good luck.

We do this all the time. Export QT’s as “same as source” using RGB color space. That’s the color space AE will be working with. Use the highest codec available, always going with 10-Bit (x) codec when possible.
The artist needs to install the proper Avid Codec using the current Avid codec installer here:
https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545&Hilite=Codecs.
The artist should then export using the same Avid codec the original footage was exported with. (ie DNxHD 220x)
Then import them back into your project making sure your field dominance is correct. Upper-Odd for HD, Lower-Even for SD.
It will be seamless and the footage will be frame accurate and identical to the human eye.
Good luck.

Since you’re working with 4.0 it’s really as simple first importing all the footage into a 720p 23.98 project.
Then create another project in 30i.
You then open up the footage bin from the 23.98 project in the 30i project and the footage is ready to be placed in to your timeline.
I usually create a new bin in the 30i project and copy all the clips into it first. The footage will come into your timeline as anamorphic squeezed. You will need to reformat the footage if you want letterbox or centercut but that’s a whole other topic for another thread.
Just be happy you’re using 4.0. This used to be a real pain but Avid has made this much simplier now. I also advise having your operator upgrade to 4.05. It’s fixed a few crash bugs that occur when mixing frame rates. You’ll also need the new QT codec installed in any graphic station you may supply clips to.
One hint though. If you’re using pan and scan in the reformat tool to reformat for center cut, set your render setting in settings to advanced and do not transcode the footage unless you absolutely have to and you shouldn’t have to.
Hope this helps.

Hey Devin,
Thanks for the reply. You made me think to check the QT library and it appears someone had pulled out a bunch of the codecs when we had a corruption issue we were trying to trouble shoot. I found the IMX codec, threw it back in and everything’s fine.
Feel a little foolish for posting.
Thanks,
Doug

My sincere appreciation. That’s exactly what it was. There had been a FX Factory demo loaded years ago before I worked here and it even had an uninstall feature.
Again, many thanks.
