    Hi,
    Please, I need help!!!

I have footage that was shot on a SONY XD CAM MEMORY CARD. So all my clips when I bring them into the Avid are XD CAM EX 35 Mbits (720p/23.976)

I need to work in a 30i project, which I believe means I need to convert my 23.98 frame rate footage to 29.97.

I am working on an AVID Adrenaline … Version 4.0

    Here are my questions:
How do I get my 23.98 footage to become 29.97 without a Teranex? Being that I am running 4.0, can I somehow do this using the CONSOLODATE/TRANSCODE option in AVID? If so, how? Or being that I’m working with version 4, do I not have to do anything since apparently I can work using mixed frame rates. I’m not sure what should be my next step. Please if anyone has insight on this, help.

    Thanks so much,
    Colleen

Since you’re working with 4.0 it’s really as simple first importing all the footage into a 720p 23.98 project.

Then create another project in 30i.

You then open up the footage bin from the 23.98 project in the 30i project and the footage is ready to be placed in to your timeline.
I usually create a new bin in the 30i project and copy all the clips into it first.

The footage will come into your timeline as anamorphic squeezed. You will need to reformat the footage if you want letterbox or centercut but that’s a whole other topic for another thread.

Just be happy you’re using 4.0. This used to be a real pain but Avid has made this much simplier now. I also advise having your operator upgrade to 4.05. It’s fixed a few crash bugs that occur when mixing frame rates. You’ll also need the new QT codec installed in any graphic station you may supply clips to.

One hint though. If you’re using pan and scan in the reformat tool to reformat for center cut, set your render setting in settings to advanced and do not transcode the footage unless you absolutely have to and you shouldn’t have to.

    Hope this helps.

    Very simple.
You import the 720/23.976p footage into a (new or existing) 720/23.976p project.

Then open or create a 30i, and through File->Open Bin, browse to the folder(s) of your 720 project.

    Edit.

With MC 4 you should be able to just mix frame rates.

Here is a good article on it: https://www.macworld.co.uk/procreative/reviews/index.cfm?reviewid=3743&pagtype=allchandate

Basically you need to be in the project type to ingest your material. After once you do that you can open a bin from any format and cut it into a timeline.

Ok so I did what you all said, I see all the footage and I can edit.

Heres my next question, when I go to output at the completion of my project (I need to deliver NTSC 29.97) will I run into issues having different frame rates?

Because right now, just as alittle test … as if I was going to output today … when I open up my digital cut tool and simulate outputting, AVID is prompting me to transcode.

    What do I do now?
Should I transcode? If I don’t will there be dropped frames?

Also, will placing effects in my 30i project when using the source from my 720p project cause any problems.

I’ve never worked with mixed frame rates and this is all very new to me.

    Thanks so much!

You should not have to transcode. In fact on the Avid forum their expert discourages it. You should not drop any frames. If you add effects, and you can, you will have to render them. That’s why you should set your render setting to advanced.

    Good luck.

When finished and ready to output, do a transcode as requested. It is about maintaining sync to the deck frame accurately.
