  • Hi Scott – not sure if you’ve considered LTO as an alternative to offload your camera original to (vs your 48TB drive). LTO-8 drives are capable of over 300MB/Sec transfer speeds and offer 12TB capacity on a single cartridge, while costing just $150. There are some great workflows we provide using this technology. Feel free to contact me if interested.

Hi Sam – sounds like you’ve done your homework. Your last point was something I was going to mention – migration. At some point you will most likely want to move the content on your LTO-6 tapes onto newer generation media in order to continue accessing/restoring it long term. Skipping to LTO-8 would make that process more complicated and costly as you’d have to restore content to disk first (from LTO-6 tapes in LTO-6 drives), then re-write from disk to new LTO media using later generation LTO drives. That’s a lot of steps, time and disk space ! As an FYI, we offer a fully automated tape to tape migration tool which eliminates the need to restore files to disk at all. Good luck and feel free to contact me for details or answer any questions you might have.

October 19, 2016 at 12:57 pm in reply to: LTO Archive vs. drive based “near line” storage

    Hi Bob –

Thanks for bringing up this topic – it is really a great discussion to have, considering the sheer amount of content being shot, stored and worked on in today’s production pipelines. There are many practical reasons why LTO is still the most reliable, cost-effective backup/archive solution available to the professional media marketplace. At StorageDNA, we’ve always treated LTO as more than just an archive solution and with the introduction of LTO-7 into the marketplace this year, it is now time to consider it an option as extended nearline storage.

We firmly believe that with LTO-7, which provides nearly 6TB capacity per cartridge and up to 300MB/sec drive speed, you can certainly do much more with LTO than with previous generations. The key to enabling functionality beyond traditional archiving is two-fold. First, you need a system architecture that is capable of leveraging the speeds of LTO-7 and beyond. Second, you need a highly intelligent software that not only drives the hardware to its full potential, but also incorporates unique workflow enhancing capabilities.

We feel that DNAevolution does both. Please check out the latest iteration of our solution at: https://www.storagedna.com/extended-nearline/

March 14, 2016 at 5:44 pm in reply to: What to look out for at NAB 2016

    Hi Robert –

We’d (StorageDNA) love to chat with you – specifically on your Avid archiving/workflow needs. While CatDV is certainly a great solution, which we support and integrate well with – I’m no sure it would be the right choice for you given your Avid environment.

DNAevolution is a turnkey standalone archiving solution that knows AAF/ALE constructs out of the box – no integration with a MAM necessary, or if you prefer we do work with just about any MAM out there as well.

But you asked for a something easy to use – which is why you should come to our booth at NAB (SL10113) and see for yourself the simple, yet comprehensive set of tools DNAevolution provides – including both Avid and Adobe project-based backup and archiving.

    Best Regards,

    Doug

  • Look, I think we all get “your point” and like Dan, this will be my last comment on this topic, as this horse was already dead before I felt compelled to correct the inaccurate StorageDNA pricing statement.
