    Shane,
The point of my post was as far as FCP goes, can it take advantage of the extra processors. This post is being typed on a 8 core mac which I just love to compress footage on. But i was trying to determine what to buy for a postion that will just be editing primarily through a SAN on gigabit ethernet, no compressor, no motion, no AE.

    Walter,
So FCP is multithreading and using the other processors to render, handle real time effects and whatever other processes can benefit from multiple processors?

If you have an older laptop with a PCMCIA slot in it. you could use it to download the footage. You would need to load the drivers from Panasonic to make it work. I use an old “17 Mac Powerbook to do this with, and it works wonderfully. However I am looking at buying a PCD20 to import directly into my MacPro.

[Shane Ross] “FCP will run, but Motion will be slow. This is a consumer computer you are buying, and a professional application, so bear that in mind. It will run, but not as well as it would on a MacPro or Mac Book Pro. “
Shane, beside the “express 34” slot, what else is there in a Mac Book Pro that makes it better than an IMac? all other parameters being equal.

Last year at NAB, Apple said they had 800,000 registered users of FCP. This year they have over 1 Million. Being very conservative, if we assumed that 100,000 of those where new purchases of FCS, that would have generated almost $130,000,000 in revenue for Apple. This doesn’t even take into account new workstation purchases for recent converts. Surely this can’t be chump change, that they would say goodbye to…. or could they?

Question 2: If Final Cut died on the vine… where would you go? We just now purchased Adobe Production Premium… It was cheaper to buy that rather than purchase Photoshop and After Effects separately. Let’s see what else is in the box… Look here’s Premier Pro!!!!

Well, I hate to say it Jeremy but you just convinced me to go the other way. I love AJA!, But I don’t want to buy a LH now and an Lhe later which would mean that I would end up with 2 cards (the LS and the LH) that would be e-bay fodder. Maybe AJA would do a trade up program! hint hint….

As Jeremy suggested these boxes work very well. We have 4 of them here.

It’s unfortunate, but the firewire chips inside camera’s and computers can be damaged by plugging in the cables in the improper order. There has been many of Sony DSR series decks fried because of this. However it usually just manifests itself by the camera/deck just not showing up on the computer. So I’m not sure what’s happening to you.

This feature is in 6. Right click on your clip and at the bottom of the menu you will find the rename feature. it gives you 2 options: Rename the clip to match the file and rename the file to match the clip. I use the one feature more than any other FCS 2 feature.
