Newtek already as Airplay available on their latest versions of Tricaster, and though that’s not broadcast sports, I am sure there are more than a couple of news remote trucks switching with Tricasters. I assume the next version of ipad, will be optimized for FCPX, making it entirely possible that a news package could be edited, on an ipad, and then go straight to air, without any intermediate infrastructure between ipad and switcher. Come to think of it somebody could shoot and edit and playback to air now…. on their iphone and imovie.

By the way, I think CMX proposed a voice activated linear editor somewhere between the 3600 and the Omni. I don’t think it ever got to actual hardware at NAB, but I used to have some marketing material for it in my “collection”.
I think before voice operation we will see a well developed ipad version of FCPX, and I hope something similar for Android from Adobe. I think they would be useful even for the “Professional”.don walker

Color is intimidating, I think because of a different looking UI than the rest of the suite. But once you get into it, IT”S FUN! and can make your video look great. The first time I used Color, it was to fix a lighting problem in a shoot (My fault). I was thrilled with the results.

I own a 170, and borrow a 150 for 2 camera shoots and it would be so much easier on us not to have have a 2 different types of batteries, AC adapters / batteries, etc. BTW when will the 160 be available? We are waiting to buy 3!

Amen to that. I haven’t bought or used FCPX, and would ideally like to spend my money in either buying FCP X or upgrading from CS4 to CS5.5 not both. (though I might end up doing that!)
If you watch this forum long enough, you pick up little nuggets of real information, that will hopefully, help me and many others make an informed decision.

Having edited on CMX for years, and having significant experience on GVG and Accom systems, i found the few times I edited on an ACE, as being a challenging but not impossible experience. The big difference is that ACE offered 2 varieties of UI’s: a touch screen, or a non-qwerty keyboard, thereby not forcing people into their way of doing things. Crawford Communications in Atlanta, (the market I worked in from 1986 to 2005) was the only major facility I was aware of that used the touchscreen interface, and nobody else that i worked for either full time or freelance, paid much attention to the ACE. Ampex made other much more significant products, ADO, the Century Series switchers (so much better than the GVG 300 btw), and of course legendary tape machines. (if you ever saw a VPR-3 in action you were amazed)
The real game changer in linear post came about with Accom Axial editor; a truly revolutionalry editor that through it’s use of Digital Disk recorders and it’s abilty to cache shots, bridged the gap, between linear and non-linear systems. But alas, by the early ’90s the hand writing was on the wall, linear systems were on their way out, the cost factor being just to big.
Ampex offered the ACE, as a side product to compliment their other big buck devices, maintaining the status quo of the million dollar edit suite.. Apple is saying, we have a better way of doing things (Our Way!) which will bring “professional editing” to the masses, and sell billions of dollars of our products in the process.
My first non linear edit experience, was on a Immix Video Cube, which to this day, had the best control panel of any non-linear editor.

July 20, 2011 at 5:42 pm in reply to: The Magnetic Timeline – Time, Space and One Clock To Rule Them AllI have read much and commented little, now this old school “Linear Editor” has one simple question; While it is obvious that the magnetic timeline is geared to a ripple edit workflow, is it a simple task to do an “overwrite edit” where existing footage is replaced by new footage, with no change in timeline length?
Or is this “old school”?
I don’t mean to sound ugly, I am waiting and watching to see if I want to upgrade to CS5.5 or dive in with FCPXdon walker

I too would like to say that was an awesome piece. I would also like to commend you, for the honesty without the hysteria. I have not had a chance to edit on FCP-X yet, because as a one man shop, I should not spend money on new software unless I’m rich or ready to make the move, and I’m neither. This last 3 weeks has made me really evaluate my Fanboy mentality, as I contemplate a move over to not only Premiere, but a PC workflow as well.
