I got the write-on to keyframe after restarting the FCPX, but it still should write-on directly by applying my effect that I created in Motion 5.

I also have the JVC GY-HM700 camera. Also love this camera. No problems whatever in FCPX when set to shoot .MOV files. Do you have ATI or AMD acceleration?

It only takes a couple of minutes to create your own drop shadow effect. I created one I called Drop and Rotate because that one effect adds drop shadow and X and Y rotation to the default Z rotation to the usual tools in the Inspector.
The one GOTCHA about these effects is that unless you shrink WITHIN the effect first, you won’t see the drop shadow because any drop shadow you create is outside the bounding box of the effect.
In Motion 5 just create a new Effect and Publish at least Scale, Rotation and Drop Shadows. Call it what you like and it appears under Effects in FCPX.
Left alone once applied to a clip, the drop shadow won’t show but don’t be tempted to scale under the Video tab in the Inspector. Instead, use the Scale for the published parameter of the effect. Then apply drop shadow.
And if you don’t scale down (within the effect) enough, any Y rotation might get its corners clipped by the bounding box of the effect. Scale a little lower within the effect to cure that.

I have a similar problem. Not exact, but in the same ballpark.
I can create a compound clip, step into it and edit and step out. Go to another project or quit FCPX and then come back. Stepping into the compound clip reveals that the clip within the compound container display above the top of the timeline view. I scroll them back into view and one of the tracks, the video clips most recently, display as a black clip and then the program crashes.
Note that I’ve used a preference manager app to delete the prefs and I’m used Event Manager X to turn off all projects except my newest one. This happened on a previous project as well. ALL compound clips in that previous project, when reopened, crashed FCPX.
At the moment its stable and working right after I again trashed the prefs, had only my newest even and project loaded, and deleted a title effect within the compound clips and replaced it with a different one. So far so good but as a bad journalist would say … “Only time will tell.”

From despair to euphoria!
I’ve already reported that the ATI 5770 card solved my FCPX performance problem but I may have also mentioned that the card won’t drive both my 30″ monitors at full res at the same time.
I was showing my supervisor the performance improvements in FCPX (running on the 30″ monitor that was connected to the cards only DVI-D (dual-link) port and displaying FCPX at full res) but also talking about how I have to live with the other 30″ monitor having one-half vertical res (and thus forcing one-half horizontal res and resulting in one-fourth the pixels on screen) and that I couldn’t see more than one Finder window at a time. Like 1988!
He went to his office and pulled out a Mini-Display Port to Dual Link DVI converter! New in the box! I was skeptical though but I hooked it up and.. it works! Now I’m working on two 30″ monitors both running at full res on a single ATI Radeon HD 5770 card. Many thanks to T and everyone for the help.

Jamal, the issue is cleared up for me now that I have the CUDA pref out of my Mac Pro and have switched the graphics card to an ATI Radeon HD 5770, but one of the first things I do when I get a new Mac is to make sure the HDs (or the computer when on AC) never go to sleep.

Braggart! 🙂
At the moment I have FCPX running ‘like BUTTAH”!
I had the CUDA preference panel installed in an effort to speed up FCPX when I had the NVidia card inside. I took that out and re-started the computer. Right now it’s flying!
I can go from Safari to FCPX and FCPX responds instantly.
Many thanks for you help T.

I have a newer Mac Pro. 10GB of RAM (not that much less than your 13GB on the older Mac Pro) and you have a number of heavy-hitting apps open whereas I only have Saftari and Outlook open in addition to a couple of Finder windows.
Yes, something is going on. I’m on the case and I really appreciate your video to show me what I should be getting.

This is not as extensive as you may want but I whipped out my 4S and took a short movie of the lag time between switching to FCPX and the time it takes to become active. You have to keep it short to upload by email from the iPhone, so I’ll try to send more short ones later.
I wanted to use an independent camera so that we can eliminate the screen capturing software slowing down the computer.
Download it from my Public folder on me.com. It’s called fcpx1.mov and it’s at
