Thanks for the suggestions. An MXF container should work fine. I can easily script a re-wrap on our Mac in Quicktime. In the long run, MXF is even preferred for us over Quicktime. But at the moment a few steps in our workflow require a Quicktime container and won’t yet work directly with MXF.

    Sincerely,

April 24, 2013 at 1:44 pm in reply to: JKL shuttling issue with CS6 on Mac/Decklink

I posted about this same issue a few weeks back – and yep – Black Magic tech support even confirmed that they were able to replicate it in house. They pointed the finger back at Adobe. My configuration is different than yours – a late 2012 iMac 27″, 3.4Ghz Core i7, 32Gb ram, 2Gb NVIDIA 680 Card connected via thunderbolt to a Black Magic UltraStudio. However, the issue is exactly the same. The client monitor is unusable as a client monitor at anything other than standard play speeds. Fast forwarding or rewinding lags way behind. I assumed it was a thunderbolt issue.1

At NAB I made a point to specifically stop by the AJA booth and see if the ioXT thunderbolt product had the same issue. If not, I was going to consider a switch. Unfortunately, the guy demoing the ioXT in AJA’s booth couldn’t even get it to run with Adobe Premiere. Every time he hit play it crashed out of the software and he didn’t know how to fix it. He was an FCP X guy. So I never had an opportunity to try it out.

I do have a “demo” ioXT I’m borrowing from a friend that is being shipped to me as I type this. So within a week I should have a better idea whether the AJA product performs better than my UltraStudio.

I do get the feeling it’s a software issue – either on Black Magic or Adobe’s part, so hopefully since Kevin chimed in and mentioned they are aware of the issue someone will get it worked out soon.

I agree with Angelo. I was told at NAB by an Adobe rep that Anywhere would be available in May. That product won’t work without the new versions of their apps also being available.

    Matt,

You may be referring to the now de-funct Toshiba HD-DVD format? You could burn in Compressor to a standard DVD-5 disc using the Macs Superdrive and playback in a Toshiba HD-DVD player. We used to do that all the time for short trade show loops. You are limited to 30-minutes or less of content and I recall (it’s been several years) we had to choose the HD-DVD MPEG-2 preset in Compressor. I don’t remember any of the H264 presets working. We also never attempted any menus. We just set the video to be First Play in DVD Studio Pro and had it loop back at the end. I don’t even know if the newest version of Compressor still offers that HD-DVD setting. Compressor 3 definitely does, but I don’t have 4 installed on this laptop to check.

This won’t work without an HD-DVD player – so if you don’t have one you’ll have to dig one up on E-bay. And if you are going to do that – it’s not worth the effort. We switched to much better looking H264 encoding and USB sticks as soon as we could as it was faster, easier, and less expensive in the long run. You can get a player cheap that will let you plug a USB stick in and playback HD content via HDMI at 1920×1080 with a loop.

  • The Ultrastudio is connected directly to the Mac via Thunderbolt. It’s then connected to the external monitor via HD-SDI. There are 2 Thunderbolt ports on the iMac. One is going to the Promise Array. The second goes to the UltraStudio. No chaining.

I’ve been told by Black Magic technical support that what I’m seeing is typical performance with the UltraStudio Thunderbolt product when using Premiere Pro CS6. It can’t keep up when fast-forwarding or rewinding. My question mainly is – is anyone experiencing different performance with a Decklink card or perhaps an AJA ioXT?

    Thanks,

Craig is correct. H264 mp4 VBR are all a part of our settings. I’m not sure how long the encode takes as we have the luxury of dropping it into a watch folder on our server and it handles the encode while we head off to other tasks. Being H264 though, I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t take you a while.

    Mark,

We send out to our transcribers a 480×270 mp4 at about 350 kbps on a daily basis and never have any complaints. That gets us around 120 Mb for a 1-hour show. Even at that size any action reference they need is clearly visible.

The manual says nothing about Motion Blur. Are you talking about Premiere Pro or After Effects? I know how to use motion blur in AE. I’m trying to find it in Premiere Pro without having to send my project over to AE.

March 8, 2012 at 6:00 pm in reply to: FCP 7 FXPlug Plug-Ins have all suddenly disappeared

I wish it were that simple, but no, All Effects is selected and still none of my FXPlug items are showing up. Those that I turned into “Favorites” are showing up in that folder but if I try to apply any of them I get the red screen with the error “Unable to load effect”.
