Yes, it’s exactly the same as if you were importing the clips from the SxS Pro memory cards. A few rules to follow when transferring the media from card to hard drive:
Never re-name the BPAV folder.
If you have multiple BPAV folders put each one inside their own separate folder on your hard drive.
Don’t alter or remove anything from inside a BPAV folder.If any of the above points are not followed Sony’s XDCAM Transfer Tool and Sony’s Clip Browser will not see the BPAV folders on your hard drive and will cause you problems.

Sadly, you are out of luck trying to import and play back EX footage in Final Cut Express because the EX codec needed does not exist in that program. Only Final Cut Pro. As you have discovered, you need to transcode to a format/codec that FCE already has, which may or may not result in a quality loss during the process.
The workaround is to buy the Calibrated Software for Computers without FCP. This will allow you to view and play back EX native MP4 clips in Quicktime 7 and other programs that support Quicktime. it Doesn’t specifically say that FC Express is supported but I’m sure they would let you know if you sent them a short email.
Other than the above suggestion you are limited to what you’re already doing, unfortunately. Do you have a friend close by that has FCP 6.0.2 or better? If so then that would be the best choice. If you’re planning to buy one of the EX cameras in the future then you need FCP.

I’m in the same boat as you. Don’t know if the savings in time and backup simplicity is worth the Nexto DI asking price. At least not yet. I certainly like the idea of not having to pack a laptop around, though. This device doesn’t look much larger than my Edirol R-09HR field recorder, and the backup speed plus redundancy with an attached HD makes it rather attractive.
I also like the idea of the device being able to read the Convergent Design MPEG2 recording format. This means that you can backup the Nano Flash CF cards as well. Sweet.

Pretty much, yes. You could put Sony’s Clip Browser on the net book and copy the BPAV folders to connected hard drives, then use the program to preview your footage before deleting the footage from the cards. Don’t forget about USB flash drives as well. Some of them have enough memory that you could store the BPAV folders from more than one SxS (or other) card onto one flash drive, depending on the capacity of the recording card(s) used.
There’s also the NEXTO DI backup storage device that a lot of folks are raving about. This is a standalone device that backs up your EX files and also plays them back for review.

XDCAM Transfer doesn’t have the capability to do what you want. There are only two windows, the Browser and Activity windows. The Browser window cannot be split up. The workaround is to use Sony’s Clip Browser at the same time. Drag Clip Browser to your second screen, highlight the first clip you wish to play back and hit the Option and Return keys. This puts Clip Browser in full screen mode. In XDCAM Transfer just choose the same clip and compose your comments as the Clip Browser plays back the same one.
To return to normal display mode in Clip Browser use the escape key.

On the top of the handle just behind the front cold shoe is the monitor volume. press and hold the “+” button until you hear the sound in your headphones. There will also be a scale in the viewfinder while you have the plus or minus buttons pressed.
