I just did an interview yesterday with 2 computer monitors just behind the talent and were there for a reason. I’m in NTSC land and I used an EX3:
HQ 1080p 30
shutter speed 1/40th sec.
flicker reduce OFFThe result was perfect. No screen flicker and no moiré pattern at all. The monitors were like looking at photographs. Lowering the shutter speed gets the screen flicker to disappear and increasing shutter speed makes it worse.
You’ll need to use your own recipe in PAL land. Good Luck

Heidi, welcome to creative cow. Clip Browser won’t connect to your network but you say that your producer and logger would be able to access your connected hard drive, yes? Would they not be able to view those clips remotely then, by having their own copy of Clip Browser at their end? There’s also another free viewing app called VLC Player that will play back native XDCAM EX .mp4 clips. Would that do it for you or am I missing something more important here.

There is no way to do this that I’m aware of. You’d have to ask a Powerpoint expert. We just use a dedicated camera for the slide presentation that gets imported into the timeline during editing. The track is for reference only because you want to use the actual slides from the Powerpoint presentation for the final product. This means that you can use a less expensive video camera to record the presentation because it’s just for reference.
Anyway, that’s the way we used to do it.

H.264 is a delivery codec, not an editing codec. That’s why you’re having trouble editing with it in FCP. Most people are going to tell you that converting to and editing with your Kodak media using ProRes is the way to go. I don’t know why you’re having quality issues with ProRes because everyone else will tell it’s a great codec. Do a comparison conversion using a small piece of your media in both Apple Intermediate and in ProRes. Go with the codec that produces less of a file size with the same quality.
As far as output, export a QT movie using current settings and then use Compressor to encode to H.264 for the web. It’s faster than the “Export Using Quicktime Conversion” command within FCP. Keep in mind that you’re also converting, editing, rendering and compressing in HD and that takes longer to do than SD. Especially on your machine which is not particularly fast by today’s standards.

It looks as though I’m not the only person seeing this situation. Others are reporting the issue that “this computer” becomes unavailable in the compressor batch window even after the program was working fine initially. At some point it just stops working and the submit button becomes greyed out.

I wonder if rebuilding the system directory with DiskWarrior would help. Must get the new DW version anyway, so we’ll see.

Sorry Michael, but I’m not at that friend’s place anymore today. I think I may have turned sharing off in the Qmaster window (system prefs>Qmaster). I thought there might have been some general fix that people might know about when this happens. My friend has never been able to use Compressor right from day one and I thought a reinstall might correct this. Qmaster was on, BTW, before I started fiddling with the sharing preferences.
For my own computer Compressor/Qmaster has always worked so I’ve never had to worry about troubleshooting this particular issue. Perhaps I’ll get my friend to do a software update on Compressor 3.5 but I somehow doubt there’ll be a difference. He’s running a fairly new iMac with OS 10.6.xx

If you’re doing clip naming and logging on a daily basis you need a program like CatDV. You can log, add comments, change clip names, etc. and do all kinds of things that will stick when you import to FCP. There’s too much about the program to list here but I use it along with countless others and have nothing but great things to say about the ease of workflow. There’s even a command to “Send to Final Cut Pro” when you’re ready.

Yes of course. 5600k is the correct setting. That part of my brain that has a grasp for the obvious is still asleep. Sorry about that. With regard to the w/b itself, regardless of how much light is present it remains that the temperature will still be the same. I’m sure there’s a bit of change as the sun sets or rises but that’s all part of the effect.
