Your directories on the media drives may have become somewhat corrupted. This is known to happen over time when files are being deleted from or being written to your hard drives. Consider buy the program DiskWarrior to keep all your directories in top shape.

The problem of randomly missing media files may also be the result of a corrupt project file. Try copying your work into a new empty project to see if that solves your problem.

It’s because Canon cameras do not record the audio at exactly 32k or 48k, depending on what you have it set at. DVCAM on the other hand, does record at exactly those numbers. Versions of FCP earlier than v.4 indeed had a setup just for this issue. However, later versions are apparently supposed to auto-detect any Canon camera connected and make the appropriate adjustments without the user’s intervention.

Having said that, I regularly capture all my Canon and Sony footage through one small Canon camera and I’m not seeing any out of sync issues whatsoever. And I have to say that my video captures are in chunks a heck of a lot longer than 10 minutes. I suspect it just boils down to making sure you have the right sequence presets when it’s time to capture. If you’re already doing that then anything else I suggested would just be a guess.

Hi Jon,

The friend who suggested trashing your FCP pref files gave you good advice. It won’t hurt anything to do this because once you start up again FCP will automatically create new pref files. It sounds like this might be the root of your troubles.

There’s also a free program called Final Cut Pro Rescue that will do the job for you. Just do a Google search and you’ll find it.

Since you’ve been working on your doc for over 1 1/2 years now there might also be problems with the directories on your media drives that will also prevent FCP from accessing your files properly. You should consider buying the program DiskWarrior to keep these important directories on top shape. Disk directories sometimes get corrupted over time just from adding and deleting files from the hard drives. DiskWarrior will build a brand new directory instead of trying to repair the old one like some lesser programs do. Read about keeping your system in good shape by going here:

Open Disk Utility, select the desired disk from the list on the left, choose ERASE from the options on the right of the window, type in the name you want to give the disk, select Mac OS Extended (NOT journaled), then click on ERASE. Journaling is usually activated for the startup/system drive only.

That’s all you need to do. Will only take a few seconds.

Just to add to my earlier post: when you read Graeme’s article about 24p just remove “DVX 100” from the text and insert “XL2”. The workpath is exactly the same for your Canon.

I tried the free plugin from Lyric and it works just like its description says, but it doesn’t do anything about improving picture noise/grain. But it doesn’t advertise that it fixes picture noise, either. For a freebie it’s great.

If you’re still having capture problems try trashing your FCP preference files and try again.
Here’s another link on how to trash FCP prefs the right way. You won’t hurt a thing by trashing prefs and it may very well be a help if the prefs are corrupt. Doing so will at least remove all doubt as to the state of the pref files.
