The recording heads are dirty. Just find a reputable repair facility in your area and have everything to do with the recording heads and tape transport mechanism cleaned and adjusted. There are basically 2 types of tape: dry lubed and wet lubed. Mixing the two types by changing to another brand will invite the problems you’re now experiencing. Once you’ve had your VX-2000 cleaned choose a good quality tape and stay with it. Depending on how often you use your camera will dictate how often it will require maintenance. Once a year is minimum to prevent audio and video dropout problems in the future.

In FCP’s browser window go to: effects>video generators>bars and tone. Drag to viewer to change the length first or to a new track in the timline. I think the default length is 10 seconds. Delete the video (colour bars) and just use the audio for your bleeps. Adjust length to fit.

Obviously you can disregard the FCP prefs thing since you’ve tried that already, but FCP Rescue is still a good idea to have on hand. You might consider using a program like Cocktail to empty cache and log files that become bloated over time. This has been well known to solve big slowdowns in FCP.

Has this been going on for awhile or just since your upgrade of Quicktime to 7.0.4 and the OS to 10.4.4? The easiest thing to try first is to trash the prefeence files for FCP. If you’re unsure how to do this task go here for the how and the why:

You can also get a free app to do this job for you. It’s called FCP Rescue. Just Google it and it should come up.

As long as you’re updating within QT 7 you don’t have to worry about losing your Pro key. If you were updating from v.6 then you’d have to purchase a new # key.

That 30″ sure packs a ‘wow’ factor though. Saw my first one over xmas at the only Apple store in Canada, located in Toronto. Nice 🙂 Would certainly impress the clients. I just wouldn’t have the room to put it anywhere.

I use an Apple Cinema 20″ for my timeline and the Apple Cinema HD 23″ for everything else. Seems to work for me. I guess it boils down to the less scrolling around one has to do the better, as far as effeciency goes.

If you go to the Canon web site and do a search for your particular camera model you’ll probably be able to pull up the manual for it. Since you didn’t state which model you have I can only say that virtually all the newer MiniDV cameras will allow you to display the date/time of your tape in the viewfinder as the tape is playing. Just poke around in your menu settings and you’ll find it.

I never even thought of that. Probably because I always thought that daylight colour temp was a constant everywhere. Excellent point, Tony.
