Issues with typing in Values and the spinning wheel of death
I’m having problems in the FCP 5.0.4 and it happens after working in a timeline for a few minutes. I go to a transition length box and it opens, but doesn’t allow me to type in the highlighted box. I can deleate or change the vaules. It works for a while and then nothing. Unless I restart the whole computer, it won’t allow me to type anywhere. The keyboard is working because I’m able to use the keyboard shotcuts for editing but not value, or text windows. Then after awhile if try work arounds I can’t use the mouse to access the menu windows. It just starts to freeze up in slow motion.
Also after shuttling through footage or playing sequence on the timeline, I’ll get the spinning death wheel and the application freezes up. I have to force quit the application and if I try to reopen the application without restarting I get a -600 unexpected error. Once I restart, everything works for awhile and then trouble start over again.
Is this a settings issue, software, drive or hardware issue.

Boy… your system sounds pretty ill. It’s either software or hardware always… Post how you go to your setup software wise. Did you do a clean install of Tiger or did your computer come shipped with it? And when was the last time you rebuilt your startup disk?
Have you added RAM recently? Your problems are not normal.

I agree. Not what you normally see from a system. All of these issues are FCP only and it just started happening recently. Other applications (AE, PSD, etc) are running without issues.
I haven’t added anything or changed hardware recently except the new drivers from AJA and sound soap. I uploaded the drivers to see if that would help the problems, but no luck. I just reloaded FCP to see if that made any changes but I didn’t do a clean install. I’ve trashed the preferences of FCP, but that didn’t help. I haven’t gone as far as doing a clean install or rebuilding the startup disk because it seems more of a FCP issue than system. I was thinking about new updates from apple (quicktime, OS) that might be issues but haven’t seen post dealing with not being able to type in the values box.
That’s why I was checking the FCP threads first before I dig deeper into the system files.

Has this been going on for awhile or just since your upgrade of Quicktime to 7.0.4 and the OS to 10.4.4? The easiest thing to try first is to trash the prefeence files for FCP. If you’re unsure how to do this task go here for the how and the why:

You can also get a free app to do this job for you. It’s called FCP Rescue. Just Google it and it should come up.

Obviously you can disregard the FCP prefs thing since you’ve tried that already, but FCP Rescue is still a good idea to have on hand. You might consider using a program like Cocktail to empty cache and log files that become bloated over time. This has been well known to solve big slowdowns in FCP.

There’s a ton of interaction between OS, QT, and FCP… reinstalling them all as a completely new install will very likely fix all of your problems if you had stability at one point, you can get it back by doing the above. At the school I teach at part time, we do this as a matter of course every semester, and find incredible stability on over 100 systems. I personally do it every 6 months… things just stay copacetic that way.

Thanks Don for the suggestions. I cleaned out the prefs and cache files again, but that still hasn’t fixed the problem. It does seem like a cache problem, in the fact that restarting or refreashing the FCP application fixes the problem for awhile.
The other thing that bothers me is the fact that its only happening on my system and not a bug in FCP that I know of yet. Going to clean out the system and start over with installs on the OS and applications.
