Since I only know the Mac workflow:
You don’t need any driver if you’re pulling clips directly from the camera via the USB port. Your camera’s card icons will show up on the desktop like any other attached device or volume. The SxS driver exists so that the naked SxS card is recognized as an attached device. For example, a Macbook Pro with a built in Express 34 slot needs the SxS driver to “see” the card. I’m not sure about an external SxS card reader attached via USB. If you’re in doubt just try it without the driver. If the reader doesn’t show up on the desktop then install the free SxS driver from Sony.

Your presumption is correct. SxS Pro is single level cell whereas SxS-1 is multi-level cell. Each is good for 100,000 and 10,000 record/erase cycles, respectively.
I’m sure that over time every storage solution will fail depending on how long the media stays in storage. I have no clue as to the expected storage life of solid state media, but given enough time I’m sure even the most durable device will leak voltage eventually.
Right now I’m using inexpensive (and relatively small) USB drives. If they get exercised every 6 months they’ll probably last at least until a more permanent solution is invented. I think most of the big production facilities use LTO storage. It’s generally accepted as being the most reliable storage solution but the cost of machinery and tape stops the small potatoes guys like me from investing in the tech. I don’t have enough archived media to justify the cost.

On the original EX1 the component (RGB) and the SDI connections are both hot simultaneously. The A/V (composite) connection is active only by itself. If you have an external on-camera monitor, and it has a pass-through connection on the back then you can also send the video feed to the other room using that.

Storing or archiving media on SDHC is perfectly acceptable. What you must decide is how long you wish to store the media. This will determine which class of SDHC you’ll be purchasing. There are basically 2 types of solid state memory:
1) single level cell
2) multi level cellSingle level cell technology is 10x more reliable than multi level cell. I know the reasons why this is so, but if you wish to learn the reasons for yourself then read the PDF white paper at the link below.

Indeed. However, with the SDHC card adapters’ USB interface the increased transfer rates of this new card can’t be exploited to anywhere near its full potential.

Double level cell technology, because of what the name implies would suggest that it’s better quality, but this isn’t the case. Single level cell in flash media lasts far longer.

Yeah, the SXS Pro uses single level cell technology and is good for 100,000 cycles. The orange SXS1 card uses double level cell tech. It sounds like it should be a better solution but it’s not. These cards are good for 10,000 cycles. Still a lot of cycles in anyone’s book.

There’s no difference in performance between the two cards. The difference is in the longevity.
