Go to System Preferences in the Dock, choose Startup Disk and then choose the operating system that’s on your external drive. Then restart.

I had to do about a hundred widescreen frame grabs recently and the only way I know how to do this is to resize the pictures in Photoshop, changing the aspect ratio from 720×480 to 854×480 using the resize image command.

I do this quite a bit after capturing footage with one computer then transferring the files over to another for editing. I haven’t transferred single files that are as big as yours but I’ve done several files in a batch where the total size was much more than 34 Gig. I was also using a combintation of extrnal SATA and FW drives, just like you’re doing.

I think that recompressing all frames simply tells FCP to re-render everything before it exports the file. If you’ve already done a render before export then you shouldn’t have to worry about it.
Since I haven’t run into the problem you’re having I can’t offer specific recommendations on a fix, other than to suggest running something like DiskWarrior on your externals to make sure the directories on those drives are in top shape, then I’d try the transfer process again.

Yes, it includes pans. This is because the OIS will try to correct the biginning and end of your pans/tilts and the result will be seen in your footage as a slight jerking motion. Not using OIS when you don’t need it will also use less battery power. Your image problems may be directly related to using the GL2 in the ‘Easy’ mode becaue it’ll automatically increase such things as the picture gain setting when it’s needed. Try using the camera’s manual setting and see if that makes a difference to your picture quality.
A good manual setting baseline would be to use the 60i frame rate, shutter speed 1/60th of a second and the appropriate f stop to get the correct exposure. The last thing to change to incease exposure in low light is the picture gain setting.
When you’re shooting in low light do you find that the picture seems to have a lot more red colour in it than normal?

I don’t know how most people do it, but with Power Point at least, I access the slides within that program and export them as a series of JPEG images. From there it’s just a matter of importing them into FCP and placing them in the timeline. This is just for non-animated Power point slides, mind you. If yours are animated I’m afraid I won’t be of much help.
I suspect that .pdf slides could be done in much the same way.

If your machine has a system crash and you haven’t restarted within a certain length of time the fans will automatically come up to full speed. So the reason for your fan issue is probably not related to temperature. If this is happening a lot you probably need to do some system maintenance. If that doesn’t solve it then you may need to re-install the OS.

Getting back to your G5 problem: the logic board in my 2.7 G5 was recently replaced under warranty because one day the computer decided it wouldn’t start up anymore. This isn’t an isolated occurance from what I’ve been reading. I had similar type problems like you but since the board replacement things seem to be running more smoothly. Before, I had unexpected crashes, a lot of trouble starting up and shutting down, etc. for no reason and performance was less than what I thought it should be. If your machine is still under warranty and you don’t have the Applecare Exrtended I strongly suggest you get it.
You might consider getting more RAM, too. Makes a difference with big apps like FCP. 512 Megs of RAM is barely enough to run the OS and you’ve only got another 512 after that for FCP, which can make use of up to 2.5 Gig.

Okay thanks Mike. I already changed my setting to highest but haven’t noticed any change in performance. I’ll go to those links you posted up above.
